What is Gwern doing?

Gwern is about to help himself to something from under the Christmas tree, but Garry tells him to come and have his breakfast.   

At the last minute, the christening outfit arrives

Dani is pleased that in the post Seren’s christening outfit has arrived, but she refuses to show it to Garry till tomorrow.

"Chester's not coming home"

Catrin has been staying overnight and says, “I’ve just had a message from Chester – he’s not coming home – he’s had a better offer.”   Dani predicts that her mother will not be happy, 

"Nev is her priority"

but Catrin replies, “I don’t think she’ll even notice – Nev is her priority.   She hasn’t been in touch over the weekend.”

"You know how much she has looked forward to seeing him"

Garry tells her, “You know as well as I do how much your mother has looked forward to seeing Chester – you and Aaron need to cheer her up now.   Come on, Cat, everyone argues with their mother sometimes, 

"It's important for us all to be friends"

“but it’s Christmas Day tomorrow – and Seren is being christened – it’s important for us all to be friends.”

"Santa Claus won't be able to find you!"

Gwern warns her, “If you stay here, Santa Claus won’t be able to find you!”   

Catrin does not fancy going home

Catrin, however, does not look keen.

"Can you cook this ham for Diane?"

DJ visits number 9, and says that Diane would like Sara to cook the ham by tomorrow, as she does not have time.   

"I fancy a flutter later on"

He is carrying a copy of the Racing Post, as he fancies a flutter later on, and Sara tells him to leave the ham in the kitchen.   

"Time for your bath, Ifan"

She takes Ifan up for his bath.

"I'd put my money on Golden Glow"

Jason asks, “Which horse have you got your eye on?   I’m not interested, but if I was, I’d put my money on Golden Glow.”   

"I'll keep a look-out for that one"

DJ will keep a look-out for that one, and on his way out of the house, 

He gives the post to Jason . . .

picks up the post, handing it to Jason.

. . . including another new credit card

The letter which interests Jason contains another credit card, this time from Masindon Bank, and he looks pleased.

Eileen works on the christening cake

Eileen is putting the finishing touches to the christening cake, 

"Will you come to the cemetery with me tomorrow?"

when Angela asks if she and Jim want to go to the cemetery with her tomorrow, to put flowers on Courtney’s grave.   Jim points out that they have already been to do so, over the weekend.   

"I knew I'd be busy today and tomorrow"

When he has gone out to feed the sheep, Eileen says that she knew she would be busy today and tomorrow with the christening, and in any case they go to the cemetery regularly.

"I do miss Courtney"

Of course, Angela will not leave it there, but again stresses how she misses Courtney, adding that having Huwi is a great help.   Eileen is positioning flowers on top of the cake, as Angela continues, “It means the world to me that you’ve given me a second chance,” and Eileen agrees that there is nothing more important than family.

Angela displays her handiwork

Angela is glad that she said that and goes to fetch the blanket, proudly displaying her name on it;  “I couldn’t think of a better way to show how much I appreciate being part of the family again.   

"I was hoping I could be godmother"

“I want you to have peace of mind when it comes to Huwi’s future, so I was hoping I could be his godmother tomorrow.” 

Eileen is very shocked to see what she has done

Eileen is shocked to see the newly-applied embroidery, and looks very disapproving.

"Golden Glow – what a show!"

In the street, by the Christmas tree, DJ is watching the horse race on his phone, and comments, “Golden Glow – what a show!”   

"I've won £500!"

Gywneth approaches and is told that he has won £500.   

She would have accompanied him to the Deri to celebrate, but has to go to town;  

"Mr Big Spender!"

“You’re welcome to take me out tonight if you want, Mr Big Spender” she suggests, and kisses him, 

Dai is disgusted that DJ is with her again

much to the disgust of Dai, who is across the road.

"Look at those two!"

Jason comes out of his front door, and Dai exclaims, “Look at those two!”   When DJ comes towards him, 

"You're playing with fire there!"

he demands, “How many times do I have to tell you?   You’re playing with fire there.”   DJ answers that it is none of his father’s business, and he will kiss whoever he likes.   

"I won £500 because of you!"

Dai stomps off along the street, while DJ tells Jason, “I won £500 pounds because of you!   It’s only fair that you should have a cut.”   Jason is very grateful, and asks if he can have it by bank transfer, 

"Not a word to Sara, mind"

but urges DJ not to say a word to Sara, as it is a surprise for her.

"Why don't you want my name on the shawl?"

Angela is once again playing the victim;  “Why don’t you want my name on this shawl?   Every other family member is on it.”

"You caused us so much suffering!"

“You’ve only been back a fortnight – you caused us so much suffering!   Am I meant to forget all about it in a flash?” her mother rages.   

Jim walks in on this altercation

Then Huwi cries, but Eileen tells Angela to leave him;  “I’m his mother, Angela!” she shouts, just as Jim comes in.   

"Get out of my sight!"

Eileen tells her quite emphatically, “Get out of my sight!” and shows Jim the embroidery.

Britt appears deep in thought

Catrin returns to the chip shop flat to find her mother alone there;  

"Chester's not coming"

“I just don’t fancy tidying up,” Britt informs her, “I have heard from Chester – he’s not coming – 

"Stuff him!   It's his loss!"

“stuff him!   It’s his loss!   Nev is busking in town, so we can have a special lunch, just us ladies.”

"Didn't you notice we weren't here all weekend?"

“You’re not upset about Chester?” Catrin enquires, but is told that her mother still has her and Aaron.   “Didn’t you notice that we weren’t here all weekend?   We stayed in the Deri,” says Catrin, 

"You were only across the road"

but her mother was not worried as they were only across the road.

“It’s Christmas tomorrow – where’s the tree and the trimmings?” Catrin demands, “You haven’t done anything!”   

"We're going away to a five-star hotel!"

Britt suddenly comes up with the allegation that they are going away tomorrow morning to a five-star hotel, which Neville has arranged.

She is asked, “What about Seren’s christening, and the procession?   Everyone thinks you’re making costumes – you haven’t started.”

"That's not my problem!"

Britt flies into a rage, “That’s not my problem!   We’ll be relaxing in a posh hotel – I’m fed up with trying to please other people!   I work hard, and if I want to treat my children, that’s exactly what I’m going to do!”   Catrin goes to her room.

Presumably Dai is glad to get shot of that

Beti has just bought a festive gnome in APD, 

Jason has won – this time

and Jason is surreptitiously looking at his phone, where it is announced that he has won £500.   

"I hope you're not gambling again!"

“What are you doing?   I hope you’re not gambling again!” snarls Dai, but is told that Jason was looking for a Christmas gift for Sara.   

"It's a bit late in the day for that"

“It’s a bit late in the day for that,” Dai grumbles, “I didn’t think you two were buying anything for each other this year.”

Jason points out that Sara deserves something, after all this gambling business;  

"No chance whatsoever!"

“I wanted to ask if there was any chance of a Christmas bonus,” but Dai dispels any such hope, but then suggests that Jason goes online and picks something, 

"Look, I'll pay with the company card"

then Dai will pay for it with the company card, before taking him into town to pick it up.

"I've told Catrin that we're going now!"

Britt is on the phone to Neville;  “I’ve told Catrin we’re going now – so we’ll have to find somewhere!   If only we’d won that blinking raffle.”   As she looks at the laptop, she finds another offer;  

"There – I've booked it!"

“A cottage with luxury hampers and everything – it’s available tomorrow night – I’m going to book it – there – I’ve done it!”   

"It doesn't matter how much it costs!"

We see that it is at ‘Holiday Cottages Wales’, as she shouts down the phone, “It doesn’t matter how much it costs!   I want to leave Cwmderi today to find somewhere for us to stay – the four of us tonight, OK?”

Eileen's flowers for the christening

Angela is drowning her sorrows at the Deri when her mother comes in to inform Dani that she is taking some flowers to Bethania for tomorrow;  “As you’re insisting on christening Seren the same day, I don’t want our flowers to clash.”   

"I hadn't thought about flowers"

Dani says she had not in fact thought of flowers, so Eileen’s will be fine.

Eileen wants no help from Angela

As Eileen turns to go, Angela asks if she wants any help, and is told, “No!”   Angela orders another drink.   Hywel asks for a menu, 

"Are you on your own?"

and notices Angela on her own, inviting her to join him and Rhys.   

"Where's my drink, then?"

Gwyneth comes in, and wonders why there is no drink waiting for her;  “The traffic was terrible – people doing last minute shopping,” she moans, and he goes to get her a drink.

Aaron and Catrin are at home

Catrin and Aaron are sitting quietly at home;  Aaron is chatting online to S666;  

He tesll his new friend, S666, his problems

he types, “Mam is acting really odd.   She has a new boyfriend, and we have to go away with him over Christmas.”

"Nev is expecting us!"

Britt tells him to switch it off;  I’ve packed your clothes – anything else you want, throw it in the bag.”   Aaron demands if they have to go, and is told that Nev is expecting them, and they are going to the cottage early tomorrow morning.

“Come on, Cat – it’s got a hot tub – I organised it especially for you,” she alleges.

"I want to spend Christmas at the Deri"

Catrin replies that it is not right for them to go, and she wants to spend Christmas at the Deri.   

"I've got such ungrateful children!"

“I can’t believe I’ve got such ungrateful children!” roars Britt, “Most children would love to go away on holiday – I’m not telling you again – get your bag!”

As Catrin flounces out of the room she leaves her phone behind;  

S666 does not seem keen on parents, either

Aaron receives the message, “I hate parents!” from S666, and his mother orders him that they have to go.   

Britt gathers up their phones

He too, carelessly leaves his phone, and his mother picks up both of them.

"Esther likes the lights – just like her mother"

In the Deri, Rhys is joking that his father has too many Christmas lights, but is told that Esther likes them, just like her mother did.   “It must be difficult for you – the first Christmas without Sheryl,” comments Angela, 

"I have to move on"

but Hywel accepts that he has to move on.

"Can you make your own costumes?"

Jim, with the baby, arrives at the bar and informs Dani that the minister wants them at Bethania half an hour earlier tomorrow.   Dani asks, “Can you make your own costumes for tomorrow, please?   It’s an emergency, Jim!”

"You overstepped the mark with that blanket!"

Angela immediately gravitates towards them, and Jim reproves her that she overstepped the mark with that christening blanket;  “What right did you have to sew your name into it?”   

"I'm part of the family, too!"

She drunkenly replies that she was trying to do something nice, as she is part of the family too.

He replies, “Are you really?   Because I have my doubts – 

"We would rather you didn't come at all!"

“and you can forget that nonsense about being a godmother.   To be honest, Eileen and I would rather you didn’t come at all!”

Another Hywel Llywelyn chat-up line?

Hywel comes over and invites her back to his house, saying he will make her a cup of coffee.

"Right, I have to get Gwern"

Gwyneth has to leave to fetch Gwern, 

"We've only just got started!"

but DJ protests that they have only just got started;  “It’s Christmas Eve, and I have a child – I never said I’d stay out all night,” and she goes upstairs to collect him.

"Another pint and a chaser – a large one!"

DJ staggers to the bar and asks Dani for another pint and a chaser.   

Gwern has been getting on well with his father

Meanwhile, upstairs, Gwern has been having a lot of fun with Garry;  

"Don't forget to leave some carrots for Rudolph"

he is reminded to leave some carrots for Rudolph.   

"You'll have to make your own costumes"

Dani comes upstairs and advises Gwyneth that she will have to make her own costumes for the procession.

"They're going away over Christmas"

Dani tells Garry, “Catrin has sent me a text – Britt hasn’t made any costumes, and they’re going away over Christmas.”   

"She would never miss the christening"

He cannot believe this, as Britt would never miss Seren’s christening, 

She shows him the message in black and white

so Dani shows him the message;  “So guess who has to phone everyone to ask them to make their own costumes – they’ll be chuffed to bits!”

Eileen removes Angela's handiwork

Eileen is carefully removing the unauthorised embroidery;  

Neither she nor . . .

both she 

. . . Jim look very pleased

and Jim look very angry.

"Is it Santa Claus?"

The doorbell of the salon flat sounds, and Gwern anticipates that it is Santa Claus;  his mother does not think so, as children need to be asleep before he comes.   

"You're drunk!"

The person sounding the doorbell appears to Gwyneth to be drunk, but she nevertheless lets him in, sending Gwern to go and clean his teeth.

"You look lovely, Gwyneth!"

DJ comes in, rather unsteadily, and tells her that she looks lovely;  

"I've come for my Christmas present"

“I’ve come for my Christmas present,” he says, but is told quite abruptly that Gwyneth cannot tonight, but she lets him sit down, and will make him a coffee to sober him up before he goes home.

"If Gwern wasn't here, there wouldn't be a problem"

“Listen, if Gwern wasn’t with me, there wouldn’t be a problem,” she tells him, but I’m not comfortable with this.   Garry’s watching me like a hawk anyway – you must understand that.”

"Mam, DJ's going to frighten Santa Claus!"

Gwern comes back in, and sees DJ, snoring with his mouth open, on the sofa;  “Mam, DJ’s going to frighten Santa Claus!”   

He is not a pretty sight

She does not know what to do.

Garry finds the chippy flat empty

Garry arrives at the chip shop flat to find no-one there;  

He tries ringing two numbers . . .

he gets out his phone and dials a number, but receives no reply.   Then he tries a different number, 

. . . then hears a phone sounding . . .

and hears the phone sounding somewhere;  

. . . and locates then in a cupboard

he traces the sound to a cupboard in the kitchen, where the two children’s phones have been hidden.   

He is puzzled

He is very puzzled.

Hywel assures Angela that she can talk to her mother again, 

"She doesn't want me at Huwi's christening"

but the reply is, “She’s made her feelings crystal clear – she doesn’t want me at Huwi’s christening.   

"She was so angry with me!"

“I’m sure she wishes she had never found out I was her daughter.   I’m not exaggerating – she was so angry with me, just for putting my name on that shawl.   

"She won't keep me away from that christening tomorrow!"

“But I’m telling you now, neither she or anyone else will keep me away from that christening tomorrow.   

"I'm part of that family!"

“I am part of that family, whether she likes it or not!”
