Cwmderi Diary 2018: 21 November 2018 (2nd)

"Where are you, Britt?"

Colin is still trying to contact Britt; he leaves another message, “It’s me again – where are you, Britt?

"Phone back – please!"

“We’re starting to worry now – phone me back, will you – please?”

He searches through paperwork . . .

Then he has an idea, and looks through a box file;

. . . and find her passport has not gone

he finds her passport, so that gives him a little relief.

"Quiet – or you'll wake Huwi!"

Kath is working in the kitchen at Penrhewl when she trips over something, and Eileen is angry that she could have woken Huwi; Kath admonishes her for leaving toys on the floor, adding,

Kath recites Mark's infant troubles

“You don’t know you’re born! Mark had colic, jaundice and nappy rash before he was a month old!”

Eifion has just come in and comments that Mark is still trouble; he will make a cup of tea, and is encouraged by Kath to put something in Eileen’s cup.

"There isn't enough room in here, is there?"

“Look, there isn’t enough room here to look after a baby and run a business, is there? We need more room if the business is going to grow.”

Eifion suggests that they could move out to the old Deri,

"That place has been a mess for years"

but Eileen says that the place has been a mess for years.

"It wouldn't take the two of us long"

“It wouldn’t take two of us long to clear the place,” he maintains, but Kath does not want to get involved. Eifion encourages her, “Everyone will have more room then – you, Huwi and his mother.”

Aaron is feigning illness

Gaynor has brought Aaron home from school, as he said he did not feel well; he does not want any lunch.

"I couldn't get hold of Britt"

“I couldn’t get hold of Britt,” Gaynor complains,

"We haven't heard from her since Monday"

and is told that Colin has not heard from her since Monday; he thinks that is probably what is wrong with Aaron. She has to go to meet the Chair of the Governors.

"Has Mam phoned?"

Aaron asks if his mother has phoned, and Colin lies that she is staying with a friend.

Sioned uses her charms to good effect

In the shop Sioned tells a customer that if he buys one item, he can have another for half price.

"That's your tactic – flirting?"

“That’s your tactic to increase business, is it?” enquires Rhys, “Flirting with customers?” Mathew comes in and offers Rhys a chip;

"There's not an ounce of fat on me!"

he boasts that there is not an ounce of fat on him, as he is doing the work of two people at APD, with Jason still off.

"Go and make him feel guilty!"

Sioned tells Rhys to go upstairs, and make him feel guilty for eating those chips; “I’ll be up when Colin gets here.”

Proud father Jim

At Penrhewl, Jim is holding the baby when Eifion proposes starting to clear the dairy; “That’s the best idea you’ve had all day,” remarks Jim,

Eifion and Kath go to make a start on the dairy

and Kath is eventually persuaded to help him. Jim adds, “I saw DJ in the village, and he wants me to persuade you to go to rugby training tonight.”

"Work comes first now, Jim!'

Eifion does not fancy going training, and points out that work comes first now.

"Is he just saying what we want to hear?"

When they have gone, Jim asks Eileen, “Is he just saying what we want to hear, or is he for real? I don’t know what we would do without him these days. And it’s time Cadno was fairer to him as well – for the boys’ sake.”

Eileen proposes that one of them should have a word with her,

"I've already spoken to Cadno"

and he admits that he already has done so; “She promised to make an effort to be fairer with him.”

"Want a drink to calm your nerves?"

Colin is on edge in the Deri, and Garry suggests a drink to calm his nerves, but he protests he has a shift in the shop.

"Can you keep an eye on Aaron?"

“Can you keep an eye on Aaron?” he asks, “He’s upset that his Mam is not around.”

"He doesn't look very upset"

Garry says that he does not look very upset,

He is again playing games on his phone

playing games on his phone.

“At least her passport is at home,” sighs Colin, “Do you know where she’s gone? You don’t seem very worried – if you hear anything, let me know – pronto!”

"Do you know where Mam is?"

As soon as Colin has gone, Aaron goes over to the bar and asks Garry where his mother is;

"She's shopping"

the reply is that she is shopping, probably buying him a new game.

"Why does everyone think I'm thick?"

“Why does everyone think I’m thick?” demands Aaron,

Mathew does not want to go out tonight, but will save his money, and has a new TV for company anyway.

"Sioned's the reason you want to stay in"

Rhys reminds him that there will be Sioned as well; “I bet that’s why you want to stay in!” Mathew accuses him of flirting with Sioned in the shop earlier, and Rhys replies, “Jealous, are you?”

"She hasn't got a good reputation"

As he goes on, “She hasn’t got a good reputation, when it comes to the way she treats men,” Sioned comes in and is told that Mathew wants to stay in tonight, but she has not made up her mind what she wants to do yet.

"Drinks with a fit and handsome bloke?"

Rhys lists her options, “A night in with grandpa in his slippers – or drinks with a fit and handsome bloke?”

"I can't see anyone fit and handsome!"

She answers that she cannot see anyone fit and handsome.

"It's like St Fagan's in here!"

As they arrive in the rather decrepit, cobweb-covered dairy, Kath remarks that it is like St Fagan’s [National Museum of Wales] in there, and Jim recalls that Auntie Marian put it all there;

"You turn this handle for hours!"

“They used to make a butter in this one years ago – you put the milk in, and then turn the handle for hours. I just want them out of the way to make room for the Cae Glas produce.”

"I'll get rid of them, Jim"

When Eifion proposes getting a skip, Kath maintains that she will get rid of them. Just then Eifion’s phone rings, and he is surprised that Cadno is Colin;

"What have I done to deserve this?"

“That would be great!” he says, “All right, if you insist – what have I done to deserve this? Oh, right!”

He looks at Jim

He looks at Jim, then asks, “Can I phone you back later?”

He turns and tells Jim that he can have the boys at Christmas; “And she’s going to pay for me to fly to Scotland to see them before that.”

"It must be the festive spirit"

Jim comments that it must be the festive spirit.

"Whatever you said, thank you!"

Eifion adds, “I don’t know what you said to her, but thank you!”

Gaynor is speaking to an argumentative parent . . .

Gaynor is on the phone as she walks into the shop; she says that she cannot do anything about it at the moment, as she has left school for the day.

. . . and leaves without paying for her chocolates

She picks up a box of chocolates, and continues speaking, “The best thing you can do is to contact the secretary and arrange for an appointment to see me. Is that all right?”

Colin is concerned

She walks out of the shop again, without paying for the chocolates, and Colin looks somewhat concerned.

Kath short-changes the chutney customers

The dairy has been tidied up, and Kath is putting chutney into jars; “You put one less spoonful in each of them, and then you’ve got enough left to make an extra pot,” she comments. He assumes that she will then sell it on the sly.

"Why does everyone think the worst of me?"

“Why does everyone think the worst of me all the time?” she wonders, and he says that he was not born yesterday.

"And you're going to sell the antiques"

“You’re also going to sell those antiques,” he continues, and she warns him to keep his mouth shut, as that is her business. “You shouldn’t cheat your employer,” he advises,

"The trick is not to get caught!"

but she points out that the trick is not to get caught.

"Guilt isn't a good feeling – trust me!"

“Guilt isn’t a good feeling – trust me!” he assures her

Gaynor prepares for a meeting

At Llwyncelyn, Gaynor is preparing for a budget meeting tonight, as the school has to find more cuts; “I don’t have any choice, I have to bring the work home,” she tells Colin.

He sees the box of chocolates on the table

"Do you intend to pay for them?"

and asks, “Do you intend to pay for them? You left earlier without paying.”

"Did I do that?"

Gaynor is mortified and cannot believe that she did that, explaining that she was in a hurry, but he refuses payment for them; “I just wanted to check you’re all right.”

“You still haven’t heard from Britt, then?” she asks,

"There's still no sign of Britt"

and Colin replies that there is no sign of her; she has not contacted Catrin and Aaron, and it is not like her.

“Garry says that he has not heard anything – but you know Garry and his dodgy dealings.

"What if someone tried to get back at Garry?"

“What if someone’s tried to get back at him by targeting Britt?”

"I have to tell him the truth, Kath"

Eifion tells Kath he appreciates all that Jim has done for him by contacting Cadno, and feels that he must tell him the truth; Kath predicts that he may well” be forgiven straightaway,

"You've done a good job in here!"

and at that moment, Jim appears, very impressed with the work they have done on the dairy.

"Eifion wants to get something off his chest"

“Eifion’s got something he wants to get off his chest,” says Kath, “Go on then – out with it!”

"I want you to be his godfather"

Eifion begins, “The day Huwi was born . . .” and Jim describes him as a hero, even wanting him to be the baby’s godfather. “I don’t deserve it,” Eifion ploughs on,

"I pushed her, and she fell over"

“Eileen didn’t fall – I pushed her, and she fell over. I was trying to leave with the boys, and Eileen tried to stop me. I drove off and left her.”

"You hit a pregnant woman?"

Jim’s demeanour abruptly changes; “You hit a pregnant woman?” but Eifion adds that he could not leave her there, so came back. “I could have lost Eileen and Huwi because of you!” Jim shouts, and he marches out of the dairy.

"You need to tone your muscles"

At the bar of the Deri, Rhys tries to persuade Garry that he needs a fitness plan; he just needs to tone his muscles.

"I've got cat-like reactions!"

Garry is proud of his cat-like reactions when he needs to look after himself, and he pretends to lash out at Rhys.

Sioned has convinced Mathew that he needs a pint

Sioned and Mathew come in, after she persuaded him he deserves a pint; Rhys remarks that he has time for a couple of pints before his father phones to say the dinner is on the table.

"You should get your own place, Rhys"

Sioned suggest that he should get his own place, then he could do what he likes; Mathew is sure that living with his father must be cramping his style.

“Do you have a problem with me asking Sioned out for a drink?” Rhys demands,

"Dating a flatmate is not a good idea"

“Dating a flatmate is not good idea.” Mathew considers it is a lot less hassle, as he would not have to get up early and rush home to get ready for work –

"Just walk across the landing!"

instead, just cross the landing.

Rhys warns that if she dumps him, he could be thrown out of the flat, but Mathew says he was only joking,

"Of course I don't want to date her"

and does not want to date her.

Jim vents his rage on Eileen

Jim flies off the handle with Eileen; “I can’t believe you and Eifion kept such a thing from me! What if something had happened to you, or Huwi-John?”

She tells him to be quiet, as Huwi is sleeping,

"It was my fault, Jim"

and maintains that it was her fault as she stood in Eifion’s way.

"He deserves the sack!"

Jim is quite adamant that Eifion deserves the sack, but she accuses him of overreacting;

Eifion is listening to this . . .

Eifion has just come into the farmhouse, and overhears this argument.

“Do you see now why we couldn’t tell you?” she demands,

. . . and says that he will go

and Eifion says he does not want them to argue because of him, so he will go.

"You two have lied to me!"

“You two have lied to me!” rants Jim, but Eileen reminds him that Eifion has now admitted everything; he says that he was not thinking straight that day.

"We can't cope without him"

“What’s important is that everything turned out fine in the end,” Eileen summarises, “Eifion did the right thing in the end – and we can’t cope without him!”

"You're lucky Eileen has a big heart!"

Jim comments that he is lucky that Eileen has a big heart.

Gaynor's dinner has been delivered from the café

Colin is still at Llwyncelyn when Ed delivers Gaynor’s dinner, so he thinks it is time that he left.

"I have to get back to Catrin and Aaron"

He insists he has to get back to Catrin and Aaron. Gaynor is sure that Britt will turn up,

"She's lucky to have you worrying about her"

and is lucky to have someone like Colin worrying about her.

She takes the box of chocolates and rings Izzy’s number;

She leaves a message for Izzy . . .

“I was just phoning to have a little catch-up – I haven’t heard from you for a while. Phone me back when you get this message.”

. . . and looks dejected

She sits forlornly.

The antiques have reached Maes-y-Deri

Eifion has assisted Kath to take the antique items to Maes-y-Deri, and he reports that admitting everything worked out in the end.

"You don't have to tell the whole truth all the time"

She warns him that he does not have to tell the whole truth all the time.

She goes on, “I’d say that this on its own would be worth £200, after I clean it up and polish it a bit – vintage costs, doesn’t it?”

"I shall want my cut"

Eifion suggests that he should get a cut for carrying them here,

"I'm taking all the risks!"

but she insists, “I’m flogging them, and taking all the risks – there’s no telling who’ll come here to get them!”

It appears that Eifion's alter ego, 'John', is still at it

Then his phone sounds again, and he reads the message, “Hi, John. Do you fancy meeting tonight? The usual place?” He types the reply, “Great.”

"You Mam is on the way home"

Garry and Aaron come to the chip shop flat, and Colin lies again that Britt is on her way home;

"I haven't had a reply from her"

Garry has also left her a lot of messages, but has received no reply, “But I know Britt has read them,” he adds.

Aaron is listening

Aaron has overheard this, but Colin is still not convinced that Garry does not know where she is;

"You're not in some kind of trouble, are you?"

“You’re not in some kind of trouble, are you?” he demands, but Garry stresses he has no idea where she is. “She would never leave the children for so long!” Colin insists.
