"I've invited Gwern over"

Garry brings Dani a cup of tea and says that he has invited Gwern over to play with his sister;  

"He doesn't want to play with babies"

“A boy of Gwern’s age doesn’t want to play with babies,” she scornfully replies, 

"I want them to get to know each other"

but he explains that he wants them to get to know each other.   

"No, Garry!"

“No!” she tells him, “You should have asked me first.”

He stresses that Carol needs to see other people, apart from her mother, and says that should happen now.   

"You're doing the same with me!"

“Gwern is her brother – you can’t shut him out – you’re doing the same with me!   You don’t want me to be with Carol on my own – and it’s weird, if I’m honest!   I’m her father, and it’s important for us to bond.”

Dani momentarily loses her temper

Dani shrieks, “No!” then quickly recovers her composure, adding, “What I mean is . . . please don’t invite Gwern over – Carol’s got a cough.”   

"Carol is over that"

Garry insists that she is over it, but Dani disputes this.   

"Don't look at me like that!"

“Don’t look at me like that,” she says, “We don’t want Gwern to be ill too, do we?”

Arwen is at the hospital for her check;  

Arwen is back for the results

“I hope that smile means that it’s good news,” says Ffion, 

"We can give Arwen the all clear!"

and the doctor confirms that they can give Arwen the all clear.   Ffion asks if she is totally sure the tumour has gone, 

However, she will need to be checked each month

but is rather troubled to be told that they need to check Arwen every month, 

"They have to be careful, Ffi"

in case another tumour develops.

"This is good news for you, Arwen!"

The doctor emphasises that it is unlikely, and that today is good news is a reason to celebrate.

"I hoped that it was going to get better"

Garry goes to see Britt;  “I had hoped that after looking after Carol at the start of the week, that I could build on that, that it was going to get better.     

"Now Dani's worse, if anything"

“Now Dani’s worse, if anything.   I’ve tried everything – I’ve been patient with – I’ve been straight with her!”

"Do you want me to have a word with her?"

Britt asks if she should have a word with Dani, but he thinks that talking will not help, as she is so touchy;  

"Perhaps you could give her more help with Carol"

“Perhaps you should give her more help with Carol,” he suggests, “Take away some of the stress – then she might talk to you.”

Britt has a new set of Babygros to give her, and points out that, after all, she is the baby’s aunt;  

"I'll go over this afternoon"

“I’ll go over this afternoon.”

Hywel is pleased to hear the news about Arwen 

Hywel sees Gethin and asks him what the hospital said about Arwen;  he is relieved to know that she has the all clear.   

"But we can't predict the future"

However, Gethin replies that they cannot predict the future.   Then Hywel reveals his good news, that he and Sheryl are getting married in June.   

"The sooner, the better, now"

“The sooner, the better, now,” he says, but when he goes, Gethin does not look as if he welcomes the news.

Then, of course, the first thing he does is to visit the salon, where Sheryl has a customer awaiting a trim.   

Sheryl is glad that Arwen has the all clear

She asks him how it went for Arwen at the hospital, and is also relieved to hear that all is well.   “I’ve just seen Hywel,” he tells her, 

"Set a date, have you?"

“You’ve set a date for the wedding, have you?”   She says she will come to the garage later, as she cannot talk at the moment.   

"A trim, was it, Caroline?"

He leaves, and Sheryl attends to her customer, Caroline.

"Isn't he a clever Dadi?"

As Dani nurses Carol, Britt comments, “Look what Dadi made for you – isn’t he a clever Dadi?”   

"I'll do anything else you want me to do"

Then she addresses Dani, “You stay there, put your feet up and relax.   I’ll start by washing these cups.   I’ll do anything else you want me to do – I remember how to prepare a bottle.”   Dani is not fooled;  

"Garry's behind this, isn't he?"

“Garry’s behind this, isn’t he?   

"Leave it, Britt – I can manage"

“Leave the washing-up, Britt – I can manage.”   Britt asks if there are any dirty clothes that need washing, as everyone needs help with a little baby.

"Show silly old Mami that she's wrong"

Then she goes on, rather condescendingly, “Carol agrees – she wants to show silly old Mami that she’s wrong,” Britt continues.   

Dani snarls for her to get out now;  

Dani takes strong exception to this

“No-one calls me a silly mother in my own home!   Understand?”   

"But I am family, Dani!"

Britt points out that she is family, and Dani’s sister-in-law, so she cannot be thrown out.   

Dani apologises, but maintains that Britt has called at a bad time, and Carol wants a nap.   

Britt does not like this at all

At last Britt takes the hint and goes.

"She more or less threw me out"

Downstairs in the bar, she tells Garry, “She’s ill – she more or less threw me out – I’m not exaggerating.   

"She's wound up like a top, Gar!"

“It’s obvious that Dani is finding being a mother too difficult – she’s wound up like a top!   

"I think she has Post-natal Depression"

“Now listen to me carefully, Gar, I think she has Post-natal Depression.”   

He confirms that he has been reading about that, but Britt assures him that is not any real cause for concern.   “But what do I do about it?” he demands, and Britt says the first step is to get her to admit that she has a problem, and she will need professional care.   

"I think this party . . ."

Garry is only too willing to pay for a therapist;  “I could take her on holiday – I will do anything, but I think this party . . .”   She tells him to forget the party, as Dani cannot be like this in front of people, but he insists that the party will do her good;  “She’s kept herself to herself too much, hiding upstairs, not seeing anyone but Carol,” but Britt will not accept this.

Garry's outburst attracts the customers' attention

He finally shouts, “No, Britt!” which attracts the attention of Beti and Madge, who are also chatting at the bar.   “I’m not stopping the party, and that’s the end of it!” is Garry’s final word, before he goes out to clear his head.

If it's not him in the salon, it's her in the garage

Gethin is working on a car in the garage when Sheryl materialises in the doorway;  

Gethin prepares some privacy for their assignation

he invites her in and is about to lower the shutter, when she tells him that they cannot do this.   

"We should finish it now"

“We almost got caught the other day, and this business with Arwen – I think we should finish it now before anyone gets hurt.”   

He agrees that what she has said is right, 

"The buzz I get from being with you!"

but he cannot ignore the buzz he gets from being with her.   “We can’t do this – it’s stupid!” she insists, but Gethin replies that worse things happen.

"Yes, the consequences . . ."

“Yes – the consequences!” she says, as she walks towards the door, 

". . . the mess we'll create if someone finds out!"

“The mess we’ll create if someone finds out!   The people we love will get hurt – you understand that, don’t you?   Do you really think it’s worth it?   

Gethin does not like what she is saying

“There will always be something between us, but it’s not meant to be – we’d better forget about it, OK?”

“We have to to get back to reality, before it goes too far,” she goes on, 

One last kiss — well, not necessarily

and after one last kiss, 

Sheryl walks out of the garage

she turns and leaves the garage;  Gethin appears very frustrated by this turn of events.

Elgan sees Garry under the shelter

Garry is standing under a shelter in the park, when Elgan happens to be passing;  “Foul weather,” the doctor comments, and tells Gary he does not feel bad, 

"I have a long journey ahead of me"

but knows he has a long journey ahead of him.   “The surgery has been very supportive and has given me as much time as I want.”

Garry asks about the Combat Stress Centre, 

Similar to the shelter in Gwyneth's kidnapping of Greta last October

but Elgan changes the subject, remarking that there is something nice about a park in winter.   

"If you don't want to discuss it . . ."

Garry begins, “Listen, if you don’t want to discuss it, I understand, 

"We think that Dani has Post-natal Depression"

“but Britt and I think that Dani has Post-natal Depression.”   The doctor confirms that depression is common, and it can be very difficult for the husband.   

"It's only natural to want to help"

It is only natural to want to help.

Garry says he is constantly afraid of saying the wrong thing, 

"Support her as much as you can"

and is advised to be there to support her as much as he can, and if it continues she should speak to a doctor, 

"There's very good support available"

as there is very good support available these days.

Nicky seems impressed with his . . .

Vicky presents Nicky

Swansea City football shirt

 and Mathew with expensive Swansea City football shirts, and Mathew complains about the cost;  

"The least you could do is smile!"

“I spent a small fortune on these – the least you could do is smile!” Vicky moans.

“You haven’t thought this through – when are we going to wear them?” demands Mathew, 

Mathew protests at the expense

“Even if we could afford tickets, we couldn’t get any – and Nicky’s way too small to go!”   She replies that it does not cost anything to watch Match of the Day on the television.

"I don't want to force you to do anything"

Still out in the park, Garry says that the last thing he wants to do is to force Elgan to do anything;  

"Yes, it was rather obvious"

“Oh, right, you want to know if I’ve phoned that centre?” the doctor replies, and Garry says he could not help noticing the way he dodged the question before.   “Yes, it was rather obvious,” Elgan concedes.

Garry again asks the question, and is told that Elgan has the number, which is a start;  Garry insists that doing it now is easier than thinking it over for days, 

He presses the 'contact us' button

so he does look up the website on his phone, and presses the ‘contact us’ button.   Garry leaves him to it, 

"Hello, I'm an ex-army medic"

and Elgan says, in English, “Hello, I’m an ex-army medic – I think I need help.”

"Is there any tea in the pot?"

Gethin arrives home and tells Ffion that he has been flat out at the garage this week;  “Is there any tea in the pot?”   

Ffion has been wondering what she and Arwen can do this weekend, 

"I might take Arwen to Cardiff"

suggesting they might go to Cardiff.   “She enjoyed that interactive thing at the Museum last time.”   

Gethin has more grandiose ideas . . .

Gethin says that it sounds like a good idea, and wonders if he can come with them.   “Why don’t we make a proper weekend of it?   Go away to London to see a show or something?”   

. . . but Ffion considers Cardiff quite exciting enough

Ffion regards this as silly, and does not think that going to London is the answer, as Cardiff will be exciting enough.   

Dani sings to Carol, and is joined by Garry

Dani is singing to Carol a traditional Welsh nursery rhyme [GEE, GEFFYL BACH];  “Gee up little horse, carrying us both, Over the mountain to gather nuts.”   Garry appears in the doorway, and sings with her, “Water in the river, and the stones are slippery, We both fell in.”

"You're very good with Carol"

He remarks that she is very good with Carol, and Dani recalls that her mother used to sing it to her.   

"I used to sing to her before she was born"

Garry remarks that he used to sing to Carol before she was born, 

"I don't want to think of you and Sioned!"

but Dani insists, “I don’t want to go back to that time – thinking of you and Sioned!”   

"Why are you so sharp with everyone?"

He wonders why she has to be so sharp with everyone;  “I was trying to create a nice moment for us.”   She admits that she cannot help it, and he believes he knows why;  

She wonders if Garry suspects anything

this makes her very uneasy.

"I think its Post-natal Depression"

“I don’t know how to say this to you – I think you’re suffering from Post-natal Depression – it’s obvious, isn’t it?   It’s nothing to feel ashamed about.”

"Yes, lots of women have it"

Dani says that a lot of women have it, and he continues that she has not been herself, but she is here for her, and they will get through this together.  

"I want the three of us to be happy"

 “The only thing I want in life, Dan, is for the three of us to be happy.”   

She thinks of the forthcoming DNA test results

She agrees with this, but looks anxious.
