Vicky arrives at Maes-y-Deri in her distressed state, and tells her mother, “It’s Mathew! He’s having an affair with Dani, of all people! I heard them talking – I think Mathew is Carol’s father! I know what I heard, Mam – it all makes sense.”

"It was nothing more than a fling" |
Debbie points out that they are not having an affair, and that it was nothing more than a fling; they only slept together once.

"You're the one he loves" |
“You’re the one he loves,” she emphasises.

"You knew about this?" |
Vicky is outraged that her mother knew about this.

"I'd better make sure Debbie keeps quiet" |
In the Deri, Dani thinks she ought to go and see Debbie, to make sure she keeps quiet; “If she wanted to tell Vicky, she would have done it by now,” replies Mathew, but Dani reminds him that it is Debbie they are talking about, and she will not be able to help herself.

Gaynor and Elgan come in, and he is disappointed to have missed Garry, as he wants his help to find a car;

“I’ve just bought an everyday car, but I fancy something more exciting – and now I have a friend in the trade . . . I don’t expect a discount – I’ll pay full price.

"Garry's been very good to me" |
“He’s been very good to me – I don’t know what I would have done without him!”

"I'm sure Gaynor has been supporting you too" |
Dani points out that Gaynor has been supporting him too; “Oh yes, but friends are important at a time like this,” he says.

"How do you know he's not Carol's father?" |
At Maes-y-Deri, Vicky is incredulous that Mathew could have been Carol’s father, then asks Debbie, “How do you know that he’s not?”

"I found the paternity test result" |
She reveals that she came across the paternity test by accident in the café, and maintains that he should have told Vicky before they moved in together.

"I'm positive he loves you" |
However, she is positive that he does love Vicky, and he begged Debbie to give him a chance.

"I just want to be left alone!" |
Vicky wants to be left alone, but her mother urges, “Don’t make life harder for yourself – talk to Mathew and consider what’s best for the baby.” Vicky, however, does not want to be with someone she does not love.

"I didn't know he could do this to me!" |
“I do love him – I just didn’t know that he could do this to me!” she sobs.

Elgan goes on – and on – about his car . . . |
In the Deri, Elgan asks for Mathew’s opinion of a car he has found online; “An MGB – they transformed the old model in 1962. I don’t know whether to go for the early gearbox or the synchromesh one –

“I’d like to go for the one with the overdrive switch.”

"Well, you've certainly done your homework" |
Mathew replies that it looks as if he has done his homework, while Gaynor is finding this car business extremely tedious; “That’s all I’ve heard this week,” she groans, and informs Elgan that Mathew is not at all interested.

"Come on, let's get something to eat" |
She is eager to leave and get something to eat.

"Elgan was going on and on . . ." |
Mathew hurries back to their flat, and regales Vicky with all the problems of his shift, including Elgan and his car.

"How about we go for a pizza?" |
He suggests they could go for a pizza later, but Vicky sits motionless, without saying a word. “But first, I need a shower!” he adds.

"I know about you and Dani!" |
Then Vicky announces, “I know about you and Dani!” This stops him in his tracks; “Mam told me everything!”

"I should have told you ages ago" |
He confesses that he should have told her ages ago, but then Debbie offered them the flat,

"We had the chance of a fresh start" |
and he thought it was the ideal chance for a fresh start. He was afraid that he would lose Vicky.

"And you thought you were Carol's father?" |
“And all this time you thought you could be the father of Dani’s baby,” she goes on.

"Dani means nothing to me!" |
He insists that it was a mistake, and that Dani means nothing to him; he has been worried sick about it ever since.
He proclaims, “When Dani said that she was pregnant – and maybe I was the father – I couldn’t believe it! I hoped she would accept that Garry was the father.”

"What about the DNA test?" |
“What about the DNA test?” demands Vicky, and he assures her that Dani wanted it, although he did not see the point, but she was all over the place. He is adamant that Dani wanted to tell Garry and Vicky, and that he was a mess, imagining he could lose Vicky.

He puts on the old emotional look |
“Waiting for the results was a nightmare,” he alleges, looking as if he is about to burst into tears, “You have no idea!” Vicky seems to be swallowing his story.

"I cant decide what to have . . .' |
In Cwm Delhi, Gaynor is looking at the menu. Elgan cannot decide what to have;

“No, not the curry – what colour car – mustard or navy blue? I thought I’d better go with Garry to the classic car auction – I’ve got plenty of time these days for such activities.”
Gaynor reminds him that he is not on holiday;

"You've only just started this treatment" |
“It’s important that you don’t do too much. You’ve only just started this treatment – I’m just concerned about you.”

"You worry too much" |
He complains that she worries all the time, and insists he has to carry on with his life. “But you have to focus on getting better too,” she replies; he says that having something else on his mind helps, and it is nice having Garry to talk to.

Mathew is drinking a bottle of beer when Vicky comes in,

asking, “Did you really only sleep with her once?”

"It just happened, Vicky" |
He explains that it ‘just happened’ – he did not chase her or anything. He knows that this does not make it better. She wonders how she is to know that it will not happen again, and he stresses that she does not have to worry about Dani.

“But she’s our boss – if you wanted a fling with someone, why didn’t you find someone . . ?” she wails. He replies that he did not want a fling, so she demands why he did it;

"Maybe you're only pretending" |
“Maybe you’re only pretending when we’re in bed.”

"Do you want me to pack my stuff?" |
Mathew says that he will pack his stuff if she wants him to leave for a while.

Vicky cannot promise that she will forget, and is not sure when she will be able to forgive him;

“But no – I don’t want you to go.” This comes as a relief to Mathew, but she adds, “If we’re going to do this, I need to know something –

“and I want the truth! Do you really want to be with me?”
He professes that he does want to be with her, Nicky and the baby who is on the way;

“I want us to be a family.” He embraces her.

“Right, go and have a shower – you stink!” she tells him;

He thinks that he has persuaded her |
after he has gone, she wonders if she has made the right decision.

The curries are served |
The waiter at Cwm Delhi brings their meals, and Elgan had not been expecting so much; he senses that something is wrong,

and asks Gaynor, “Are you annoyed about this car business?”

"It's nothing to do with the blinking car!" |
“No, it’s nothing to do with the blinking car – I’m not annoyed,” she replies, irritably, “I just feel . . . I don’t know.”

"I don't want you sulking all evening" |
Elgan wants to know what it is, as he does not want her sulking. “I don’t want an argument,” she insists, “You said yourself that having your mind on something else is helping you, and all I do is worry about everything.”
He accuses her of dwelling on it too much, and tells her not to be silly.

“I don’t think I’m helping you at all,” she sighs, “Sorry, I have to go home.”

Vicky is packing some clothes into a bag when she comes across the music box,

inside it she finds a photo of Dani with the baby. At that moment Mathew returns from his shower;

“To think I was stupid enough to believe your lies!” she snarls, “You want to be Carol’s father, and play happy families with Dani!”

"Only because Dani didn't want you!" |
When he insists that he wants to be with Vicky, her response is, “Only because Dani didn’t want you! You don’t love me!

“You have no backbone at all – you love Dani!”

"Put your stuff in here and go!" |
She gets a suitcase from the wardrobe and instructs him, “Collect your stuff and go!”

He says he knows that he has hurt her, but she rages, “Don’t even try, because I’m not listening! I wouldn’t be surprised if you were the one who wanted the DNA test! You make me sick – do you know that?”

"We can work it out – for the baby's sake!" |
Mathew maintains that they can work it out, for the baby’s sake – they can start again, properly, but Vicky laments that she thought she had found ‘Mr Right’.

“I can’t bear to be in the same room as you,” she growls.

Gaynor is sitting miserably at home when Elgan returns, with the remains of their meal in carrier bags. “I think I need to apologise,” he says,

“You’re right – I need to concentrate on my recovery – and make the most of these sessions.”

Gaynor proposes that they eat their meal in front of the television.
Mathew comes dejectedly down the stairs into the café, just as Debbie is preparing to leave;

she comments, “She’s kicked you out, has she?”

“To be honest, it’s a relief!” he replies,

“Vicky was always second best. I said a lot of things – most of it wasn’t true. At least, now we don’t have to pretend to be polite.”

Debbie realises that she was right about him the whole time.

He walks off into the darkness, and Debbie rushes upstairs to Vicky,

who is telling Josh that she does not need him to babysit after all.

"I don't want you anywhere near Nicky" |
She refuses any sympathy from her mother, and does not want her anywhere near Nicky. “Don’t be like that, please!” says Debbie,

“I should have told you about Dani and Mathew – I was wrong. He deceived me as well, you know.” Vicky grabs her coat, and warns her mother not to be here when she gets back with Nicky.

Dani is looking extremely worried, and is startled by her phone ringing;

"How was the journey?" |
“Did you get there safely?” she asks Garry, “How was the journey?”

"Sorry, Gar, I have to go" |
Then Vicky suddenly appears in the flat, so Dani says she has to go, making the excuse that Carol is crying.

Vicky shouts, “Do you know what I’d really like to do? Grab that blonde hair, rip it out and really, really hurt you!

"But I won't, so don't worry" |
“But I won’t, so don’t worry – I wanted to share that as we’re such good friends.”

"I'd started to like you" |
Dani does not know what to say, but Vicky goes on, “The worst thing is, I had started to like you – I looked up to you – someone I could depend on.” She throws down the keys to the Deri;

"Tell Garry that I've resigned!" |
“I obviously don’t need them any more – tell Garry that I’ve resigned!”
Dani demands if Vicky is going to tell Garry about her and Mathew;

"You'll have to wait and see, won't you?" |
“Perhaps – you’ll have to wait and see, won’t you?” is the reply. Vicky leaves,

Now Dani is even more distressed |
and Dani is again in a state of panic.
