16 April 2018

Jim writes a birthday card . . .
Jim is writing a greeting inside a birthday card for Eileen;
. . . then sings 'Happy Birthday' to Eileen
she comes in and he sings, “Happy Birthday to you,” and says he intended to give her breakfast in bed.
"Where's my present?"
“Where’s my present?” she asks, looking around, and he admits that he ordered it online, and it has not yet arrived,
"Here's a card"
but hands her the card.   “This looks familiar,”
"You stole it from the shop, didn't you?"
she comments, “You stole it from the shop, didn’t you?”   He replies that he left it a bit late and then panicked,
"53 is not an important birthday"
pointing out that 53 is not an important birthday anyway.
"Here's your birthday breakfast"
Jim serves her breakfast.
"They do a lovely bacon butty!"
Cadno and Eifion come out of the café, having enjoyed a bacon butty, and notice Garry unloading something from the back of his car;  they go over to investigate.
"I've changed our supplier"
He informs them that it is meat;  “I’ve changed our supplier!”
"This is because I wound you up last week"
Eifion realises that it is because he wound Garry up last week,
"This meat is a lot cheaper than yours"
but is told, “This meat is a lot cheaper than Penrhewl’s meat.”   Cadno protests that he cannot do that, but he replies that he can do what he wants, and that it is nothing personal.
"Sorry, boys, but business is business!"
“Do you think that Penrhewl is the only supplier of good quality meat around here?” Garry demands, “Sorry, boys, but business is business!”
We know where randy Gethin is heading, don't we?
As Cadno complains that he has no sense of loyalty, in the background we see Gethin, slipping away from the garage and heading to the salon.
"That's not much of a welcome!"
Sheryl asks him what he is doing there, and he does not consider that is much of a welcome.   “What are you doing at lunchtime?” he enquires,
"A totally innocent game"
“I’ll come over then – not for what you think!   I’ve created a totally innocent game – answering questions about each other, as if we were partners.
"It's a bit of fun to get to know each other better"
“A bit of fun to help us get to know each other better.”
Sheryl is totally opposed to this;
Is Sheryl actually giving him the brush-off
“Geth, it’s not my sort of thing!” she snaps, and he meekly turns and leaves the salon.
"Don't mess me around, Garry!"
Eifion is waiting in the Deri when Garry comes in, carrying a box of crisps;  “What’s your game?” he demands, “Don’t mess me around!”
"It's just a business decision"
Garry assures him that this is nothing more than business and cutting costs – making more profit.   He is sure he does not have to explain to a businessman like Eifion, and will not reveal the identity of his new supplier.
"If you would rent out one of your sheds . . ."
“I’ll tell you what would be handy – if you’d rent out one of your sheds at Penrhewl to my butcher,” Garry suggests.
"You're taking the mick!"
Eifion answers that he is, ‘Taking the mick! but Garry describes it as a reasonable business offer.
"When I've stolen all your business . . ."
“When I’ve stolen all your business, we’ll talk again,” Garry proposes.
Gethin wants to escape from Ffion
Gethin has just bought a coffee in the café when Ffion comes in, but he says he is busy and cannot stop to chat.
"You're always too busy to spend time with me"
“You’re always too busy to spend time with me lately,” she complains,
"I'm under pressure from Garry"
but he replies that he is under pressure from Garry, and that he will see her later.
"Don't let Garry come between us!"
“Don’t let Garry come between us!” she urges.
"Why buy another present?"
In the Deri, Garry asks Jim why he wants to buy another present when he has already bought one;
"I don't want to let her down"
“I don’t want to let her down,” Jim replies, but Garry reminds him that the present is already on the way, and that patience is a virtue.   Jim explains that Eileen misses Sioned especially on a day like today, and he wants to cheer her up.
"What does Eileen like?"
“So what are you doing here with me, then?” wonders Garry.   “Bring her here to the Deri for dinner!”   Then, more seriously, he adds, “In my experience, I’ve found that the personal touch is better than spending a lot of money.   What does Eileen like?”
"You're a star, Garry!"
Jim’s face lights up as he has a brilliant idea;  he calls Garry a star and rushes from the Deri
Sheryl has an unwelcome visitor . . .
Hywel arrives home, and Sheryl is disappointed that he has brought Gethin with him;  he announces another surprise –
. . . wh invites them to dinner on Friday
that she and Hywel are invited to come for a meal with him and Ffion on Friday.
Sheryl is not in favour
Sheryl is very doubtful about this, but Hywel is in favour;
"Anyone would think you don't want to go"
“Anyone would think you don’t want to go,” he says, “Don’t worry – I’ll sort it out,”
"Oh all right, then – we'll go"
so she is forced to agree.
"You could have been more enthusiastic"
When Gethin has gone, Hywel remarks that Sheryl could have been more enthusiastic;
"Do you really want a meal with your ex-wife?"
“Do you really want a meal with your ex-wife?” she demands, and he replies that Ffion is a good cook.
"Why does it bother you now?"
He wants to know, “Why does the fact that Ffion is my ex-wife bother you now, after everything the four us have done together?
"Isn't Gethin your ex-boyfriend?"
“You’re a fine one to talk – isn’t Gethin your ex-boyfriend?”
"How about we ask Ffion to be a bridesmaid?"
“As we are such close friends, how about we ask Ffion to be a bridesmaid?” Sheryl suggests, and he agrees that it is not a bad idea.
"I'll find out who his supplier is!"
Eifion tells Cadno that Garry would not disclose who his supplier is;  however, he is determined to find out.   “And do what?   If the meat is cheaper, then the meat is cheaper,” she concludes,
"Can we reduce our prices?"
“Isn’t there any way we can reduce our prices?”
"Not if we want to make a living"
He says they cannot, not if they want to make a living from it, and Cadno fears that he may take the Tapas contract – and their other contracts.
“We don’t know how much he’s paying for it.”   Eifion dismisses her as being pessimistic,
"Don't forget we're dealing with Garry Monk here!"
but she goes on, “Don’t forget we are dealing with Garry Monk here.”   Eifion is naïvely confident that he can persuade Garry to see sense.
Ffion tells her troubles to Sheryl
Ffion arrives at the salon;  she tells Sheryl, “It’s Gethin – he’s let me down – I’ve heard about the meal.   It would have been nice to hear about it before he invited you!”
"He's snapping at me and refusing to talk"
Sheryl is quite eager to cancel the meal, but Ffion thinks this may be just what she and Geth need.   Things aren’t much better – he’s snapping at me – refusing to talk.
"I don't know if I believe him"
“He’s trying to blame Garry, but I don’t know if I believe him.”
Sheryl suggests that perhaps she should do something nice for him,
"How about a massage session?"
and Ffion thinks of a massage session at the salon;  “That would help his stress levels.”
"It would be better for you to do it"
Sheryl, however, thinks it would be a better idea for Ffion to administer the massage herself, and will even give her a couple of oils,
Ffion hopes that this will do the trick
promising that some quality time together will do them the world of good.
"Flour, sugar, cocoa powder . . ."
Jim is gathering together some items from the shop – flour, sugar and cocoa powder, among other things.   Eileen asks what is going on,
"I don't want you to see what they are"
and he says he is not going to pay for them now, or she will see what they are.
"I hope it will be worth it"
She hopes that it will be worth it.
"Surely you're not getting the meat that much cheaper?"
At the bar in the Deri, Eifion enquires, “You’re not seriously getting that meat so much cheaper that you’re able to steal from another business?”   Garry replies that they will wait and see;
"On the house"
he hands Eifion a pint, on the house;
"What if we did rent out a shed to you?"
he continues, “What if we did rent out a shed at Penrhewl to you?   Would you be so pleased, you wouldn’t take away our other contracts?”
Garry negotiates a rent-free deal . . .
Garry explains that he would have more costs to worry about if he had to pay rent, and assures Eifion he would not steal their customers if he could have the shed rent-free.
. . . and they shake on it
They shake hands on the deal.
Jim's baking ends disastrously . . .
Jim’s culinary exploits do not seem to have been successful, as smoke emits from the oven.
. . .  which at least makes Eileen laugh
Eileen is highly amused, and asks what it was supposed to be;  “A birthday cake,” he mutters, and it had been in the oven for an hour or two.
"I was trying to remember how you did it"
He had been trying to remember how she did it, and now has spoiled the surprise.
"The present arrived in time"
She reports that the present arrived just in time, and that shows him that it fits perfectly.   “You didn’t have to try so hard, you know,” she tells him,
"I made the right decision about Sioned"
and goes on to affirm that she has made the right decision to cut all contact with Sioned.
She considers that they will have to forget the cake and decide where he is taking her for a birthday meal;
They will have dinner in the Deri
“The Deri?   So I can show off my new outfit.”
Gethin is salivating over the thought of Sheryl
Gethin is lusting over a photograph of Sheryl on his phone when Ffion  comes in and says she is all right about the meal,
"Please tell me first next time
but encourages him to tell her first next time.
"Would you like a little surprise?"
“Would you like a little surprise?” she begins, “You would agree that things have been a bit stressed recently – and I think that what we need, or what you need, is to de-stress.”
Gethin wonders what is coming next
Gethin is beginning to look suspicious, so she goes on,
"I'm going to give your shoulders a nice massage"
“I’m going to get that massage pad, and give your shoulders a nice massage.”
"Is this your idea?"
“Massage?” he replies uneasily, “Is this your idea?   Why have you thought about it now?”   She admits that she and Sheryl were talking,
"You've been talking to her about our relationship again!"
and Gethin irritably comments, “You’ve been talking to Sheryl about our relationship again!   I don’t want a massage, thanks.”
He puts an end to the discussion
He turns on the television to stifle any further conversation.
"The other contracts are secure"
Cadno is tidying up the boy’s toys when Eifion returns;  he reports that he has good news.   “Garry’s promised to leave us alone, and our other contracts are secure.”
"And what did he want in exchange?"
She wonders what Garry wanted,
"I'm renting him one of our sheds"
and he reluctantly reveals, “I’ve agreed to rent him one of our sheds.”
"And what would he want that for?"
She wonders why he would want to rent a shed.
"It will be good money"
“To keep car parts – engines and the like,” is the reply, “It will be good money, and will make up for losing the Deri contract.”
Cadno does not trust Garry, but is told that it is too late now,
as it has all been agreed.
"You've let Cwmderi's most dangerous crook into the farm!"
“And that’s what worries me – you have let Cwmderi’s most dangerous crook gain a foothold on our farm!”
