8 October 2018

As Hywel puts on his tie . . .
As Hywel is putting on his tie, in preparation for attending the court hearing, he is listening to the radio, and hears on the news,
.  . he listens to the local news
“At Swansea Crown Court today, Gethin Thomas will be sentenced following the murder of Sheryl Llywelyn earlier this year.”   He turns off the radio,
He appears to have mislaid something
picks up his jacket and searches for something in the pockets;  then he goes upstairs.
Mark and Non are going to talk to year 9
At school, Mark is very nervous, as he is to talk to a class about the kidney transplant which he underwent;  Non seems remarkably cool, and DJ has managed to sort out the computer problems with the screen.
"I'm not looking forward to this"
“I’m not looking forward to this,” mutters Mark, “My Welsh isn’t good enough to speak in front of a classroom of children,” but Non tries to reassure him.
"Talk to them in a way that appeals to them"
“Talk to them in a way that appeals to them, and you’re halfway there,” she advises, and DJ reminds him not to swear.
The children arrive . . .
The children file in, and are silenced by the headmistress.   She asks how many of them know anything about organ donation.
. . . and Gaynor introduces the lesson
“Miss Mererid and her brother, Mark have come here today to share a personal story with us – so listen and enjoy.”
Hywel returns downstairs and Rhys asks if he is ready;  he has heated up some soup if his father wants lunch before leaving.
Hywel locates the missing phone
After finding the phone he was looking for, Hywel says that he will pick something up on the way, and he refuses Rhys’ offer to come with him.
"I can find my own way, Rhys"
“Look, I appreciate what your’e doing, but I can find my own way.”
Rhys knows how hard it will be today, having to see Gethin again, and facing the media;
"Remember I'm here for you, Dad"
he assures his father that he is here for him.   Just as Hywel is leaving, he receives a text message from Julie;
Julie is becoming impatient
“Where are you?   The sentencing won’t be long.”
Debbie relaxes at the salon
In the salon, Debbie is sitting with her feet up, wondering if she should colour her hair;
"You've never got any clients!"
“You’ve got enough time – you’ve never got any clients!” Gwyneth chides her.”
Debbie protests that she has cut the hair of two people already;
"I've brought a load of clients back to the salon"
“I’ve brought a load of clients back to the salon, and you know that.   The problem with this place is your face – you’re useless with customers.
"No Grin Gwyn!"
“I haven’t seen you smile at anyone – ‘No Grin Gwyn’, that’s what we should call you!”
"It was totally awesome"
Gaynor asks Mark how he felt when his sister agreed to give him a kidney and he rather hesitantly replies that it was so cool that his little sister was willing to do such a thing;  “It was totally awesome,”
This causes some amusement
and the children giggle.
"It was something I had to do"
Non says that it was something she had to do, in order to give her brother another chance at life;  “I couldn’t allow one of the most important people in my life to suffer like that – I had to do something.   It’s love that drives you to do something like this – so much love that you’d do anything to give that person another chance.”
"Miss Mererid is a very special person"
Mark realises that he is a very lucky person and says, “Non – er, Miss Mererid, is a very special person.”
"That is a very emotional and personal story"
Gaynor summarises that this is a very emotional and personal story;  they are lucky that Miss Meredid and Mark agreed to come today to talk so openly with them.
Megan wants to leave some flyers at the salon
Megan asks if she can leave some flyers at the salon;  “They are details about a group from Patagonia who are visiting Carmarthenshire for three weeks next month.”
"I may well go to that meeting"
Gwyneth says that she may well go to the meeting, and enquires if there is any chance Megan may come back to the salon for a haircut –
"You're one of our favourite clients"
as she is one of their favourite clients.
"Have you heard anything about Gethin's sentence?"
Megan changes the subject;  “Have you heard anything about Gethin’s sentence?” and when she has left,
Debbie finds 'No Grin Gwyn' quite nauseating
Debbie remarks that she almost had to fetch the sick bucket, at the sound of ‘No Grin Gwyn’ trying to be nice.
"I clammed up completely!"
Back home at Maes-y-Deri, Mark describes his performance as useless;  “I clammed up completely!” but Non says he was great.
"You put up a good performance"
He feels hungry, and goes to make himself and DJ a sandwich.
DJ comments to Non, that she put up a good performance;

"It made me realise what you did was so huge!"
“It made me realise that what you did was so huge – to give a kidney like that, you’re a heroine!”
"I was scared stiff – and nearly pulled out"
She admits that she was scared stiff before she went under the knife, and nearly pulled out – but she did not want to make too much of a fuss about that today.   “It’s one of the greatest things you can do,
"Risking your own life for someone else!"
“risking your own life for someone else’s sake!” DJ insists, “Not everyone will do that.”
She agrees that she would not do it for a lot of people;  “Just those I love – like you.”   He is amazed that she would do that for him,
They are going to the Gower Bay Hotel
then he suddenly remembers that he has a present for her;  a night in a hotel at Swansea this weekend, just the two of them, so they can have some peace, away from Cwmderi.
Mark's unconventional cheese packet opening procedure
Mark, who is opening a packet of cheese with his teeth, tells DJ, “There isn’t any bacon – is cheese all right?” and DJ remarks to Non that it proves what he says;  they cannot be alone for second.
"Life – with a minimum of 15 years"
Garry is walking along the street when Rhys asks him, “How did it go?” and is told that Gethin was given a life sentence, with a minimum of 15 years.   Rhys replies that this is not half enough,
"I'm surprised your father wasn't there"
but Garry is surprised that his father was not there, and Julie is furious with him.
"Please don't say he's run away again!"
“Please don’t say that he’s run away again!” groans Rhys, but Garry is sure that they must be an explanation.   “He should have been there – he was in his suit!”  Rhys says,
"Let's go and look for him"
and they go to look for him.
Gwyneth is in her most unctuous mood
Gwyneth is trying to be on her most pleasant behaviour, as she admires the great job that Debbie has done on a client’s hair;
"Debbie can be very busy"
she advises the client to book another appointment, as Debbie can be very busy,
The client makes another appointment for November
and hopes she enjoys her party.
"Have you seen Hywel?"
Then Garry and Rhys come in, asking if they have seen Hywel, as he was not at the sentencing.
"Grief can play games with someone's head"
Debbie feels sorry for Hywel;  “Grief can play games with someone’s head,” and Gwyneth hopes that he has not done anything stupid.
"No taking advantage of her in that hotel!"
Mark says that the hotel in Swansea sounds very nice, and DJ explains that Non deserves the present after all the work she’s done recently.   “But no taking advantage of her in that hotel – my little sister’s special!” Mark  warns him that he is still starving, so goes to make another sandwich.
"You are sure about the hotel, aren't you?"
“You are sure about the hotel, aren’t you?” DJ asks nervously, “Because we’ve got a twin room.”
"Mark was just pulling your leg"
She urges him not to be so paranoid, as Mark was just pulling his leg.
"You're a lovely boyfriend"
“You’re a lovely boyfriend – you care for me – and Mark knows that,” she assures him.   He replies that it means the world to him, that she said she would do the same to him, if he were ill.
"Nobody has ever said they'd do that for me"
Nobody has ever said they would do that for him, but she points out that they are there for each other, and that is the way it should be;  “You sorted out the PowerPoint for me –
"I'd be willing to give you an organ"
“and I’d be willing to give you an organ,” Non tells him, but he does not think those two things are really comparable.
Hywel is preparing his dinner
Hywel is still dressed in his suit, and is preparing the vegetables at home when Rhys and Garry discover him;
"Are you going to tell us where you've been?"
“Where have you been, Dad?” demands Rhys, “You weren’t at the court!   Are you going to tell us where you’ve been?”
Hywel replies that he has been here at home, then admits that he has been to see the authorities;
"I've started the adoption process"
“I’ve started the process of putting Esther up for adoption – I didn’t have a choice.”   Rhys wonders what is wrong with him.
"You knew it was going to happen"
“It was the first available appointment,” Hywel explains, “You knew it was going to happen,”
but Rhys thought that his father was not serious about that.
Garry asks if Hywel has heard about the sentence, and informs him that Gethin got a minimum of 15 years;
Garry is not at all complimentary about Gethin
“I hope he rots, that’s all I can say!” but Hywel remarks that is history,
"We need to move on now"
and they need to move on now.
"You're going to dump Esther with another family?"
“And isn’t Esther part of that?” snarls Rhys, “After everything she’s been through, you’re going to dump her with another family?”
"This is the only way, Rhys"
Hywel maintains, “Maybe you think this is a bit harsh, but this is the only way.”
"You need more time to think about it"
Garry intervenes to insist that he needs more time to think about it;  “No, I don’t need more time – it’s all I’ve been thinking about,” replies Hywel,
"Esther isn't part of this family any more"
“Esther isn’t part of this family any more – now if you don’t mind, I’ve got dinner to prepare –
Garry and Rhys look at each other
“this Bolognese isn’t going to make itself.”
"That bloke's been following you like a love-struck puppy"
Mark tells Non, “That bloke’s been following you around like a love-struck puppy –
"I'd say he's fallen for you big time!"
“I’d say he’s fallen for you big time!   I was proud of you today – standing in front of a class like that.
"You were so natural – I was useless"
“You were so natural – I was useless – my mouth was as dry as a brush!”
"You're totally awesome, Mark!"
She smilingly describes him as, “Totally awesome!   It was my fault, telling you to identify with them.”
"Dad would have loved to have seen you"
Mark says that he might as well face the fact that he is never going to be cool, but he adds, “Dad would have loved to have seen you doing that, so professional.”
"Mark, stop – or I will start crying"
She wants him to leave it there, or she will start crying.   He tells her that he is a very proud big brother.
"Here are the papers about the adoption process"
Hywel has some papers about the adoption process for Rhys to read, but he does not want to see them, as it will not help anything;
"You've lost the plot, Dad"
“You’ve lost the plot, Dad – do the right thing – tell them you’ve changed your mind!   People want to adopt babies, not three-year-olds.   They could have problems trying to find a family for Esther – she could be in the system for years.   Is that what you want?”
Hywel thinks he feels guilty about Gwen
Hywel can understand what he is trying to do;  “You think that giving Gwen up for adoption was a mistake – this is a different situation.   You regret doing it, don’t you?”
"This is about Esther, and what's best for her"
Rhys replies that this is about Esther, and what is best for her.
"It's best for Esther to go to another family"
Hywel answers, “I know what is best for Esther – to go to another family – you’ll understand one day.
"I'm not going to change my mind"
“I’m not going to change my mind – this is what’s best for her.”
"We found Hywel, and he's OK"
In the Deri, Gwyneth asks what is the latest on Hywel, and is told by Garry that they have found him.   Debbie says, “He must be disappointed with the sentence – no wonder he went AWOL.”
Garry asks how things are going at the salon,
"Gwyneth is exhausted, trying to be nice!"
and Debbie tells him, “Gwyneth is exhausted after trying to be nice to her customers.”   He is not surprised,
"Just admit it – it was torture!"
and Debbie continues, “Just admit it – it was torture!”
"Megan would like to leave some leaflets here"
Megan comes in with her leaflets, and Gwyneth asks if she can leave some here.
"I used to be friends with the scoundrel!"
“I’ve just heard about Gethin’s sentence,” comments Megan, “It’s incredible to think I used to be friends with the scoundrel!”
"Birds of a feather, eh, Megan?"
“Birds of a feather, eh, Megan?” quips Gwyneth,
This does not go down well
but Megan is shocked at the suggestion and walks out.
"Pleased to see the old Gwyneth is back!"
Garry is pleased to see that the old Gwyneth is back, as he missed her.
"It was supposed to be a joke"
Gwyneth protests that it was supposed to be a joke, and Garry knew that the act would not last.
Rhys comes downstairs to find his father is not there, notices Hywel’s phone on the worktop, and looks at something on it,
Rhys takes a photo, presumably of Julie's phone number
taking a photo of it with his own phone.
"Sorry for what I said about Gwen"
Hywel has been to the shop for some Parmesan cheese, and is apologetic about what he said regarding Gwen.   He appreciates that Rhys only wants what is best, and it is going to take him a while to understand.
Rhys says he has something to do before dinner.
"I must do something before dinner"
His father is pleased that things are working out for him with the training sessions, but what Rhys is in fact doing with his phone is sending a message to Julie;
Rhys interferes in the situation – with the best of intentions
“Julie, it’s Rhys.   Dad wants to see Esther.   Can you bring her over?”
