The Lost Hours of July  (Part 1)
This episode is headed, “Eight days earlier.”
The 'Dolly Dream House' for Esther
Sheryl has just received a parcel, containing a ‘Dolly Dream House’ for Esther when the buzzer sounds;  she debates whether to answer it, but then lets someone in.
"Why is the salon closed?"
It is Dani, who asks why the salon is closed, and Sheryl tells her that she needed some lunch.
"Have you forgotten about the booking?"
“Have you forgotten about the booking?” Dani enquires, “A group from Llanarthur, who booked a pre-holiday pampering session?   They will be here in a half an hour.”
Dani detects something is seriously wrong
Dani can see from Sheryl’s expression that something is seriously wrong.
"Getting his revenge is the only thing on his mind!'
“It’s Hywel – getting his revenge on me is the only thing on his mind!   I barely get to see Esther,” Sheryl replies, and is advised to see a solicitor.
"I'll deal with the Magaluf crowd"
Dani will sort out the Magaluf crowd, while she rests, but Sheryl insists that she will open the salon, even though Dani stresses she is in no fit state to do anything.
"Esther always wanted a doll's house"
Looking at the box, Sheryl explains that Esther has always wanted a doll’s house, and that she has also bought special dolls and furniture.   Dani assures her that everything will be OK, and that she must go to prepare the salon.
She kisses the doll, in the absence of Esther
Sheryl removes a little black doll from a box, and kisses it.
Gethin is printing something
Gethin has just printed out a form in the garage when Ffion appears, and wants to know if he has had lunch;
"Arwen is staying with Nesta for a few days"
“Arwen is staying with Nesta and the children for a few days, and I thought, if you’re not doing anything else,
"We should spend time together"
“it would be a good idea for the two of us to start spending time together.”   He replies that he has one MOT to finish first.
Ffion is optimistic
Ffion is hopeful that this may be the first step towards reconciliation, but when she leaves, he looks at the item he was printing,
Gethin has booked a ferry crossing to Dublin
which is a ferry booking for Tuesday 24 July from Holyhead to Dublin, in the names of Gethin Thomas, Sheryl Llywelyn and Esther Llywelyn.   He looks deviously confident.
Hywel investigates Anita's laptop problems
Hywel has been summoned to number 10, where Anita is having problems with her laptop;  he says he will take it home and work on it,
"I want to print off a voucher . . ."
but she wants to print off a voucher first.   She tells Siôn that it was supposed to be a surprise;
". . . for a night in a Cardiff hotel"
“I saw a deal for a night in a hotel in Cardiff, and I booked it – but we can’t go without the voucher.”   Siôn is quite enthusiastic.   Hywel says that he will see what he can do to resurrect the laptop.
"Why do I deserve a surprise?"
“Why do you think that I deserve a surprise?” asks Siôn, and Anita replies that it would be nice to have him to herself for once – without Josh.
Gethin receives the usual response
Gethin arrives at the salon, and Sheryl as usual tells him to get out;  “Give me two minutes, and then I promise I’ll go,” he says,
"I want the three of us to leave Cwmderi"
“I want to help you get Esther back.   I want the three of us to leave Cwmderi – I’ve bought the tickets.”
Sheryl is less than enamoured with the idea of going away with him, and cannot believe he is serious,
"I have friends who can help us"
but he insists that he has friends who can help until they find their feet.
"I wouldn't go anywhere with you!"
Her mind is irreversibly  made up, “I wouldn’t go anywhere with you, Gethin!   I hate you!”
He points out that she will not be able to do this on her own;
"When Hywel finds out you're planning to run away . . ."
“Once Hywel finds out you’re planning to run away with Esther . . .” he begins, and she realises that he is blackmailing her, as he is the only one who knows, so how else would Hywel find out.
“I don’t want anything from you!” Gethin assures her, “I only want to help you get what you want.”
"You mean what you want!"
She takes this to mean what he wants, but he stresses is that they were happy once, and that she loved him;  she can love him again – he is hopeful.
“If I refuse, you’re going to tell Hywel!” she accuses, but again he insists that he wants to help her, to take care of her and Esther;  it is the least he can do.
"I'll think about it"
“Well, I obviously don’t have any choice – so I’ll think about it,” she concedes, “But don’t start making plans – I haven’t said yes!”   He emphasises that if she does agree,
"We have to be ready to move quickly!"
they have to be ready to move quickly, and he hurries out of the salon.
Gethin needs some money
Outside, he sees Dani and tells her that he needs some money, so she deduces that he is in trouble;  “No, I want to leave Cwmderi – not because I’m in trouble, but I think it would be best for everyone.”
"I thought you were going to sort things out with Ffion"
Dani was under the impression he was going to sort things out with Ffion, but he admits,
"I was kidding myself – it's over"
“I was kidding myself – it’s over.   There’s nothing here for me, except you.”
She reminds him of Daniel, but he says it will not affect how often he sees his son;  Dani asks how much he wants, and he replies, “About £5,000.”
"It might be best for everyone"
She agrees, and adds that it might be best for everyone, especially if he is not going to try again with Ffion.
“Just promise me one thing – be honest with her – don’t let her believe there’s hope for you and her.
"Do what's right – for once!"
“I’m serious, Gethin – it’s what’s right, and least you can do.”   He swears that he will do that.
Sheryl makes a FaceTime call to Darren in Canada;
Sheryl speaks to Darren online
she tells him that it has all gone wrong.   “Gethin is threatening to tell Hywel that I was planning to take Esther away.”   He urges her to start from the beginning, and she explains,
"Hywel's not letting me see Esther"
“Hywel is not letting me see Esther, because of the business with Gethin – and all the other stupid things I’ve done.   I decided to leave Cwmderi and take Esther with me, behind Hywel’s back.
"Gethin's blackmailing me!"
“I had no choice, Darren, not with the way Hywel’s behaving.   He didn’t realise what I was trying to do, but Gethin saw everything.   He knew what I was doing, and now he’s blackmailing me.   If I don’t go away with him, he’ll tell Hywel everything!”
"You need to see a solicitor"
Darren maintains that Hywel has no right to stop her seeing Esther, and he, too, tells her to go and see a solicitor, but she fears that something like this could drag on for years.
"Can we come to you?"
“Can we come to you – I know it’s a lot to ask, and I wouldn’t if I was not desperate, but Gethin is dangerous, and Hywel hates me!   I’m afraid of losing her, Darren!”
He agrees to have a word with Katie, as Sheryl cannot come to them without her knowing.   Dani arrives in the flat,
"You have no idea how much this means to me!"
and Sheryl thanks Darren, insisting that he has no idea how much this means to her.   She breathes a sigh of relief.
She tells Dani she feels a bit better
Downstairs in the salon, Dani is dealing with the clients when Sheryl comes down, commenting that she feels a bit better.   Dani assures her that is not too late for her and Hywel.
"Garry and I sorted out our differences"
“After all that business with Mathew and Sioned, it was awful between me and Garry, but we sorted out our differences.”
Sheryl cannot see Hywel forgiving her, but Dani predicts that it may be easier for her soon;
"Gethin is planning to leave the area"
“Gethin is planning to leave the area – no-one knows yet, and I’ve instructed him to tell Ffion first, but, once he’s gone, it will be better for you and Hywel.”
Sheryl is not hopeful
Sheryl is not hopeful;  then they return to their clients.
"Hello, Darren!"
Anita has been packing her bags and is surprised to see Darren’s name come up on her phone;
"Oh – Katie – what's wrong?"
in fact it is Katie, who is very angry, and Anita asks what is wrong.
Ffion tries to start the reconciliation process
Ffion has prepared lunch, and Gethin sits, looking very depressed;  “Look, I’ve been thinking a lot about how it all went wrong between us, Ffion begins,
"I should face up to some home truths about myself"
“And it’s time for me to face up to some home truths about myself.   A lot of our relationship was focused on me – my needs with the drinking and Arwen’s illness.”
"No, stop – I had an affair!"
Gethin stops her there, insisting that it was not her fault, stressing, “I had an affair!”   Ffion wants them to move on from that, and points out that it would be easier if he moved back to live at Cysgod y Glyn.
"We must go for it 100%"
It will not be easy, and it might not work, but if they are going to give it a try they must go for it 100%.
"I can't!"
He replies that he cannot;  “If we really want to get back together, it’s important to give 100%,”
"You don't want us to get back together?"
and she takes this to mean he does not want them to get back together.
"The least you deserve is honesty"
He shakes his head and says, “I don’t want to mislead you – the least you deserve is honesty.”
"You and Sheryl are back together!"
Ffion furiously assumes that he and Sheryl are back together, but he denies it.
"You begged me to take you back!"
“You begged me to take you back!” she shrieks, but he replies that she deserves better than him.
"You've made a fool of me again!"
“You’re telling me!   You’ve made a fool of me again, haven’t you?   You let me tell you how much I wanted this to work, asking you to move back in!”
"I don't feel the same way any more!"
Gethin says that he has realised he does not feel the same way any more,  and just wants to be honest with her.   “Well, let me be just as honest with you!” Ffion roars,
"You're the worst thing that's ever happened to me!"
“You’re the worst thing that’s ever happened to me!   Go on, get out!”   She drags him to his feet and roughly pushes him out of the door,
She screams with fury
then screams with anger.
"Sheryl is planning to take Esther away to Canada"
Anita goes to see Hywel, and is anxious about the whereabouts of Esther;  “I don’t know if I’m doing the right thing, telling you, but Sheryl is planning to go away to Canada and taking Esther with her.   Katie just phoned me, and said that Sheryl has contacted Darren to ask for his help, but she didn’t agree with it, because it’s not fair on you.”
Hywel cannot believe it
Hywel can hardly believe what he has heard, but she goes on,
"I could never live with myself"
“I couldn’t live with myself if she took Esther away, and you never saw her again.”
"I'd better go and check on her"
He wants to go and check on her upstairs straight away.
Sheryl is working on her clients . . .
In the salon, Sheryl offers helpful hair-care tips to her clients, and is surprised when Hywel arrives, pushing Esther in her buggy.
. . . and is amazed when Esther is brought in
She is delighted to see her daughter,
He says he has an urgent meeting . . .
and Hywel tells her he has an urgent meeting with the client;  “Can you look after her for a while?   She was asking for you.”
. . . but it is a pretext to snoop around upstairs
Dani is optimistic that things are looking up, but Hywel has seized the opportunity to slip upstairs to the flat, where he looks through several drawers, searching for something.
In the Deri, Gethin orders a pint from Garry,
"Shouldn't you be having lunch with Ffion?"
and is asked, “Shouldn’t you be having lunch with Ffion?   She was looking for you earlier – what went wrong, then?
"I'm fed up with people clearing up your mess!"
“I’m fed up with people clearing up the mess you leave behind.   If it wasn’t for Dani, you’d be out on the street.”
"I won't be in this dump much longer"
Gethin assures him that he will not be in this dump much longer, and then maintains that it is not fair for him to be dependent on Dani, so he is looking for somewhere else to live.
The girls leave the salon . . .
The three girls leave the salon, on their way to Magaluf, and Sheryl is pleased that she can close at last, but just as she is about to spend some time with Esther,
. . . but Sheryl has no time with Esther
Hywel rushes back in to collect her, and seems to be in an inordinate hurry to go.
"I thought I was having her for a while"
She chases after him along the street;  “I thought I was having her for a while,” she protests.
"So that you can disappear?"
“So that you can disappear?” he snarls, and produces the passports, for which he was looking in the flat, from his pocket.   “And her birth certificate, just in case.   Anita told me everything –
"I can't believe you would take her to Canada!"
“I can’t believe you would take her to Canada without telling me.”   She argues that she had no choice, and he warns her to keep away from him and Esther.
"I'm not going to let you do this!"
“I’m not going to let you do this – the court always sides with the mother,” she maintains, but he gleefully points out not if the mother is plotting to kidnap the child and take her thousands of miles away.   He reminds her that this is not the first time, and is quite confident that she has absolutely no chance.
"Darren, what's happened?"
Sheryl immediately gets out her phone and speaks to Darren, demanding to know what has happened.
"Do you have any idea what you've done?"
Anita and Siôn are ready to leave for the hotel in Cardiff when there is a frantic hammering on the door;  Sheryl furiously demands, “How could you?   Do you have any idea what you’ve done?   You had no right telling Hywel!”
"She was going to take Esther to Canada"
Siôn enquires what is going on, and Anita explains that Sheryl was going to take Esther to Canada behind Hywel’s back.
"What was I supposed to do?"
“He won’t let me see her – what was I supposed to do?” rages Sheryl, but Anita objects to her dragging Darren into this as well.   She points out that Katie is fed up with her, treating Darren like a slave.
"Calm down, ladies"
Siôn urges the pair of them to calm down, and tends to favour Sheryl’s point of view;  she points out that Esther has had such a difficult start, she did not want to go through a court case.
"You would certainly lose – that's why!"
Anita is quite certain that this is because she would certainly lose the case.
Siôn looks very disapprovingly at Anita, as she goes on, “It’s not right for Esther to be taken away from the life she knows – yet again!   In fact you did exactly the same with our Wil.”
Sheryl's arm moves too quickly for the camera
Sheryl’s reaction is to violently slap Anita across the face, and Siôn is stunned.
"After everything I've done for you!"
“Is this how you treat me after everything I’ve done for you?” Anita demands, “I’m going to make sure Hywel gets full custody of that little girl, because she’ll have a better life without you in it!
"We'd all be better off without you!"
“We’d all be better off without you!”   Sheryl rushes out of the house.
So that is where Anita's injury originated
That slap has drawn blood on Anita’s cheek, and Siôn looks as if he cannot believe what he has just witnessed.
