"How was your relationship with Sheryl?"

Anita is in the interview room, and is asked to describe her relationship with Sheryl;  

"We've always been quite close"

“Great – she was my son’s partner years ago, so we’ve always been quite close,” she replies.   The DI confirms that he is Darren, who lives in Canada, 

"How did you come by that scratch?"

and then asks about the scratch on Anita’s cheek, and she repeats that she scratched herself with her ring in bed.

DI Davies doubts that she is being totally honest;  “We have spoken to Darren and Katie, and we know about the argument you had with Sheryl the day she died.   

"You found out that Sheryl was taking Esther to Canada"

Darren said you found out that Sheryl was taking Esther to Canada without telling anyone.”   Anita is forced to concede this, and is asked, “Was your relationship still ‘great’ after you heard that?”   

"She was going to kidnap Esther, so I told Hywel

She replies that obviously it was not;  “She was going to kidnap Esther, so I told Hywel – I didn’t think it was fair for the little girl never to see her father or friends again!”   

"It's not unlike what Sheryl did to Wil!"

The DI points out that it is not unlike what Sheryl did with Wil, Anita’s grandson, then continues, “I understand that your partner, Siôn White, was very supportive of Sheryl,” and Anita replies that he used to worship her, or at least thought highly of her.   

"I went out for a walk"

She is asked whether she was jealous of their relationship, and then where she was on Friday 20 July, from 9:00pm onwards.   Her reply is that she was in the house and then went out for a walk, but the DI considers it rather late for a walk.    “I went to the Deri, but there was no-one there so I returned home.”

"Had you arranged to meet someone?"

She is asked whether she had arranged to meet someone there, and answers that she had hoped that Siôn would be there, as they had argued earlier that day, and she wanted to see him.   “Sheryl has caused you a lot of trouble, hasn’t she,” DI Davies remarks, “Life will be easier now she’s gone.”

Anita admits that she and Sheryl may not always have agreed, but she would never want this to happen to her;  

"Am I in trouble or something?"

“Am I in trouble or something?”

"Did the boys enjoy the party?"

In the shop, Dani asks Cadno if the boys enjoyed the party yesterday;  “Sometimes it’s nice to do something like that when there is a lot of sadness around,” she comments, 

"Are things OK with you and Eifion?"

“Are things OK with you and Eifion?   Sorry, I don’t mean to be nosy – I’m sure that Eifion will adapt to living in the village.”

"He's gay!"

In tears, Cadno replies that the farm is not the problem;  “He’s gay!   I found him with someone – with a man.   The farm wasn’t the problem at all – we’ve been living a lie!”   

Dani is horrified

Dani is horrified, and says that it must be awful for him.   

"You've got more sympathy for him than for me!"

“You sound as if you’ve got more sympathy for him than for me!” Cadno snarls, and Dani invites her over to the Deri for a chat and a drink.

Caradog the mouse has been widening his activities

Iolo finds that some fruit in the kitchen bin has been chewed and concludes, “Caradog is cleverer than we thought.”   

"Look, we have to use proper traps!"

Tyler again insists that they have to use proper traps, but Iolo pleads for one more day, and he will make sure there is no food left around.

"I must go and talk to Cadno"

Eifion comes downstairs, and says he must go and talk to Cadno;  Iolo suggests that he should give her more time to get her head around it.   “I want her to understand, and to see there is a way forward for us as a couple,” Eifion stresses, but Iolo doubts if this is really what he wants, as it could be his chance to be true to himself.

"I want to be with Cadno and the children"

Eifion is adamant, “I am true to myself – and I want to be with Cadno and the children!”

Gethin is asked to account for his movements

Now Gethin is being interviewed, and is asked where he was at the time in question;  “I went to see Ffion, then I caught the bus to Llanarthur and had a pint in The Bull.”   

"You used that pub as an alibi last time!"

DI Davies mentions that he used the pub as an alibi last time he lied to her, but he swears that this time he is telling the truth.   

He says he went there around 9:30pm to 10:00pm, but he did not arrange to meet anyone there;  

"I just wanted a quiet pint"

he just wanted a quiet pint somewhere he did not know anyone.   “I know I’m not the most popular person in the village – I’d just bumped into Garry, and the thought of going back to the flat made me want to get away from Cwmderi.”

"So you met Garry about ten?"

The DI extracts the information that he met Garry about 10:00pm, and then asks if Gethin was still in a relationship with Sheryl before she died.   He replies that he was not, as she was still in love with Hywel;  

"He was cruel and unreasonable!"

“Despite the fact that he was cruel and unreasonable!   He found out that she was going to run away with Esther, and stole their passports.”

"And she would still rather be with him than with you!"

DI Davies finds it hard to believe that despite all this, Sheryl still wanted to be with him and not with Gethin;  “I’m sure that must have hurt, especially after you gave up everything for her.   Enough to make you want to kill her?   If I can’t have her, nobody can – that sort of thing?”

"I would never do anything to hurt Sheryl"

He insists that he would never do anything to hurt Sheryl, but just wanted to help her – despite the fact she did not want him.   “And she was a mother – Esther won’t have anyone now, apart from Hywel!   She’s left such a void in our lives!”

"There is one more thing . . ."

As she gets up to check his alibi with The Bull, he says that there is one more thing;  “To be honest,  it’s the reason why I’ve avoided coming in – I didn’t want to get her into trouble.

He does his best to incriminate Ffion . . .

“When I went to see Ffion that night, she wasn’t there.   I let myself into the flat because I was worried about her.   I wasn’t sure if she had started drinking again.   

. . . producing the crumpled note . . .

“There was an empty vodka bottle in the kitchen, and this note.”   He passes the crumpled paper to the DI, 

. . . which the DI reads with interest

and she reads it.   He insists he does not know know if it is significant, but she is pleased that he gave it to her.

Cadno is in the bedroom

Cadno is changing the bedding when Eifion comes in, and she tells him that he she does not want to see him.   The boys are at Penrhewl, 

"You haven't told the boys?"

and he is worried that she has told them.   “What exactly do you expect me to say, Eifion?   

"Have you been with other men?"

“No, I haven’t told them anything.   Have you been with other men – before that Alun?”   

He confesses that he has

He confesses that he has, and she cannot understand;  

"Why did you stop me marrying DJ?"

“You stood up in Bethania chapel and stopped me marrying DJ.   Why?   I could have been happy with him!”

Eifion pleads that he wanted to be happy with her and the children;  

"I couldn't bear the thought of him taking my place"

“I couldn’t bear the thought of him taking my place and bringing up the boys,” so she concludes that he was just being selfish.   

"Your 'other women' – did they know?"

Then she asks about the other women – Sioned and Angela;  “You were never without a woman – did they know?”   He replies that nobody knew, apart from a couple of men, 

"I've never loved anyone as much as you!"

but then insists that he has never loved anyone as much as he loves Cadno.   She says she is going to get the boys, 

"Please let me go and fetch them!"

but he begs her to let him go and fetch them, as he does not want them to suffer.   She points out that they are bound to suffer, and stresses that he is to bring them straight back home.

"You said you were both in all night on the 20th . . ."

DI Davies has gone to the Deri, where she reminds Dani that she said she and Garry were in all night on the 20th;  

". . . but Garry wasn't!"

“But Garry wasn’t!   An eyewitness saw him at 10 o’clock.”   

"He's at a car auction in Birmingham"

Unfortunately he is at a car auction in Birmingham, but the DI wants to see him at the station early tomorrow;  

"Or I will come and get him – and you!"

“Or I will come and get him – and you!”

"Mr White, can we have a private word?"

Then she notices Siôn and wants a private word with him;  they leave for the more suitable surroundings of Y Felin.

Cadno is preparing to go out

When Eifion returns with the boys, Cadno is preparing to go out, and has arranged with Colin to look after them.   

Eifion wants to look after the boys

“I want to do that – please don’t punish the boys because of our problems,” he whines.

"This is not our problem – it's all down to you!"

Her angry retort is, “This is not our problem – this is all down to you!”   He insists that many couples work through affairs, but she tells him, “The affair isn’t the problem – you’re gay!   If I hadn’t come back and caught you when I did, everything would be all right, would it?   You’re in denial!”

"Please let me look after the boys!"

He entreats her, “Please let me look after the boys!   I will go back to Iolo’s and Tyler’s as soon as you come home.”   She says that Iolo and Tyler must think she is a fool, but he assures her it was they who begged him to tell the truth.   “I know this is my fault – and if I could change things, I would!   But please, don’t force me to lose the boys!”

"But then you go straight back to number 7"

Cadno capitulates, and agrees to cancel Colin;  “But when I come home, you go straight back to number 7.”   He is very grateful.

"I was only there about a quarter of an hour"

Siôn tells the DI that when he went over to the flat, Sheryl had just had some good news – she and Hywel had come to an agreement about Esther;  this was at about 10 o’clock.   “I was only there about a quarter of an hour – we had a glass of wine, and a chat, and then I came home.”

"Were youi in love with Sheryl?"

DI Davies poses the question, “Were you in love with Sheryl?” 

"That's a ridiculous suggestion!"

and he replies that of course he was not, calling it a ridiculous suggestion.   The DI continues, “She was a nice person, attractive – it’s obvious you thought a lot of her.”   Siôn points out that she was deeply troubled and in need of a friend.

"So nothing sexual has ever happened between you?"

“So nothing sexual has ever happened between you?” he is asked, “Would you have liked something sexual to have happened?”

"She was a good friend who was in trouble"

Again Siôn replies that she was a good friend who was in trouble;  he regrets leaving the flat when he did, because if he had stayed, he could have stopped what happened.

DI Davies does not miss his body language

DI Davies concludes her interrogation and, as she leaves the house, notices that Siôn appears to be very tense.

"Now I've lost everything else as well!'

In the Deri, Cadno admits to Dani that the last few weeks have been hell;  “I thought losing our home was bad enough – but now I’ve lost everything else as well!”   Dani consoles her that she has two beautiful boys, a steady job and that she is young – she will get through this, but Cadno does not know what to do.   

"Don't make any hasty decisions, Cadno"

She is advised not to make any decisions yet, but just trust herself, and the solution will become clear.

Siôn comes into the Deri and asks for a whisky;  

"Detective Davies interviewed me"

Anita tells him she was interviewed by Detective Davies.   

"Yes, and me"

He replies that so was he, and she says, “I feel so guilty for the way I behaved towards Sheryl at the end – I was so angry about everything.   Do you want to come and join me?”

"We've been trying to contact you all day"

DI Davies arrives at Cysgod y Glyn, saying that she has been trying to contact Ffion all day, but she has been in Cardiff with Arwen.   Ffion is asked if she can call someone to look after Arwen, as they would like to interview her at the police station.   

"I'll try to contact someone"

She will try to get someone to come over.

Cadno finds Eifion asleep on the sofa . . .

Eifion is asleep on the sofa when Cadno returns, and she covers him with a blanket;  

. . . but thinks better of prying into his phone

she picks up his phone and is about to snoop into it, but then decides to put it down again.

"We're investigating a murder, not a stolen bicycle!"

At the police station, Ffion is impatient, but is reminded by the DI, “We’re investigating a murder, not a stolen bicycle!   Where were you at the night Sheryl was killed?”

"I went to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting"

Ffion replies that she went to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, and left there about 10:30pm, or something like that.   The DI is surprised that meetings are held that late, 

"People need help at every hour of the day"

but Ffion points out, “People need help at every hour of the day.”

After that she maintains she went home, but there was no-one in the flat to corroborate this;  “Arwen is staying with my sister, Nesta.”   

"You separated as a result of Gethin's affair?"

She is asked to confirm that she and Gethin have separated, as a result of the affair with Sheryl.

“I understand you were about to get married,” the DI goes on, “Before his affair with Sheryl. Did you hate her?”   

"She was not one of my favourite people"

Ffion admits that she was not one of her favourite people, but they used to be good friends.

"You weren't good friends when you wrote this"

“It’s obvious you weren’t good friends when you wrote this,” DI Davies adds, picking up the crumpled note and reading it;  “Dear Sheryl, though there is nothing dear about you, 

"You ugly, bald bitch – you don't deserve to live!"

“you ugly, bald bitch – you don’t deserve to live!”
