29 August 2018

Julie is still there in the morning
Next morning, Julie is still sitting beside the coffin
Mark and Debbie are having some breakfast
as Mark and Debbie prepare for the funeral;
"Time you got dressed, Julie"
Kath comes in and tells Julie it is time she got changed,
"Rhiannon hasn't arrived yet"
but she protests that Rhiannon has not yet arrived.   Kath does not think that she will be coming.
Mark wants to get a can from the fridge, as it will help with the stress, but finds there are none;  then there is a knock at the door, and more flowers are delivered.
"They're from Kevin – the pig!"
When Debbie sees that they are from Kevin,
They are immediately consigned to the bin
they go straight in the bin.
"I don't want it to come between you and Garry"
Gethin assures Dani that the last thing he wants is for Sheryl’s death to come between her and Garry;  “I want you to be happy,” he says.
"Your suit is by the wardrobe"
Garry comes in, and Dani informs him that his suit is by the wardrobe.   She is glad that Julie asked him to carry the coffin.
"Don't you ever hurt Dani again!"
When she has gone to change, Gethin warns Garry to never hurt Dani  again, or he will regret it.
"Who do you think you are?   The Godfather?"
“Who do you think you are?   The Godfather?” Garry demands.
"We could have an afternoon in bed"
Mark and Debbie sit on the sofa, staring at the coffin, and Mark suggests that they could stay at home, as they would have the house to themselves;  “What do you say?   We could have the afternoon in bed!”   Debbie replies that Sheryl was a friend, so they have to go.
"You should be ashamed of yourself, Mark Jones!"
Kath has overheard, and reprimands him, “You should be ashamed of yourself, Mark Jones! You have to go, because there’s a big spread in the Deri afterwards, and I’m not making any dinner!”
Mark decides against leaving his mug on the coffin
Julie comes downstairs, dressed in pink,
The undertaker's men have arrived
and then Mark opens the door to the undertaker’s men.
"A funeral is no place for a child!"
Outside Bethania, Rhys considers that Esther should be there, but Gaynor replies that a funeral is no place for a child, and wonders where Elgan is;  “He only had to change his suit.”
Britt tries to hide her injury
Britt walks past them, and Ed and Kelly, who are standing outside number 10, notice the bruise on her cheek;
"It's not the time to ask what happened"
Kelly does not think that now is the right time to ask what happened.
Anita has insisted on dressing in black . . .
Anita emerges from the house, dressed in black, which surprises Kelly;  Anita explains that she likes to show respect;  “I know Sheryl and I didn’t always see eye to eye,
. . . saying she wants to look her best for Sheryl
“but I want to look my best for her today, at her funeral.
The hearse arrives . . .
At the end of the street, they see the hearse approaching;
. . . passing Garry and Dani . . .
it passes Garry and Dani outside the Deri,
. . . and many other villagers
and various other villagers along the High Street, before reaching Bethania.   We hear the sounds of organ music from the chapel,
Gethin is keeping an eye on things . . .
and Gethin is watching from the upstairs window of the Deri.
. . . then returns to his task . . .
He sits down, and begins to write in a notebook, but then throws down his pen
. . . but gives up
and bursts into tears.
The coffin arrives at Bethania . . .
Inside the chapel, the coffin, carried by Iolo and Tyler, Garry, and Britt,
. . . preceded by Siôn White
is preceded by Siôn, as a pop song, ‘Flying without Wings’ is being played’.
"That song is in such bad taste"
“This song is in such bad taste,” grumbles Gaynor,
The flowers are replaced on the coffin
as Sara and Colin place the flowers on the coffin.
"Anita shouldn't be in the front row"
Julie complains that Anita is in the front row,
"I'm representing Wil!"
and she replies that she is representing Wil, who cannot be there.   They all sit down,
"A very sad day for Cwmderi"
and are welcomed by Siôn to a day which is without doubt a very sad day for Cwmderi.   “But neither I, nor Julie, want today to be governed by sadness.
"A lively and colourful life"
“We want today to also be a celebration of the lively and colourful life which came to an end far too soon – and in particularly sad circumstances.”
"One of Sheryl's favourite hymns, Calon Lan"
He announces one of Cheryl’s favourite hymns, Calon Lan;
“I don’t ask for a luxurious life,
The world’s gold or fine pearls,
I ask for a happy heart,
An honest heart, a pure heart.”
"I thought Gethin loved Sheryl"
Kelly comments, “Where’s Gethin?   I thought he loved Sheryl.”
"I thought Hywel loved her too – and look what he did!"
Debbie leans over and says that she thought Hywel Llywelyn loved her too – and look what he did.
Gethin stands by the postbox . . .
While the hymn is being sung, Gethin, wearing his suit and tie, is standing by the postbox,
. . . and inserts two letters
and puts two letters into it;
He looks at the word, 'SHERYL'
then he looks across at the flowers in the hearse, spelling out the word ‘SHERYL’.
"I had intended to keep away"
Ffion comes from Cysgod y Glyn and can appreciate that today must be difficult for him;  “I had intended to keep away – after all, she did ruin my life.   But she was also a friend – a good friend at one point – and no matter whatever she did, she didn’t deserve this.”
"It's all my fault – I killed her!"
Gethin agrees, then adds, “It’s all my fault!”   Ffion admonishes that him he only destroyed the marriage, but he insists, “No – I killed her!”
"It's not your fault – Hywel killed Sheryl!"
She protests that what Hywel did is not his fault – Hywel killed her.
“I don’t want to go in,” he wails, but she is adamant that he is not turning his back on her now, after everything, and they head towards the chapel, where the congregation have just reached the end of the hymn.
They enter the chapel . . .
The door opens and Gethin walks in, followed by Ffion;
. . . and sit behind Dani and Garry
he looks extremely troubled.
Sofia turns up at Llwyncelyn, unannounced
At Llwyncelyn, Sofia has just arrived and Elgan is rather uneasy;
"I had a lot of trouble finding you"
“I had a lot of trouble finding you,” she says, and he admits that he was not expecting her to come and see him;
"I didn't expect you to answer the e-mail"
in fact he was not expecting her to answer the e-mail.
"You're still as complex as ever!"
She comments, “You’re still as complex as ever – why contact me, if you didn’t expect a reply?”
"Can I make you a cup of coffee?"
His response is to go and make a cup of coffee, and he admits that he was on his way to the funeral of a patient, but no-one will notice if he is not there.
"Sheryl was a lot of things to a lot of people . . ."
“It was an honour to know Sheryl – she was a lot of things to a lot of people,” Siôn tells the congregation, “A mother to Wil, Meilyr and Esther,
". . . a daughter to Julie"
“a daughter to Julie, a sister to Rhiannon – and a friend to us all.   But she was a lot more than that, too.   She had the ability to touch our lives – the lives of every one of us here today.”
. . . as is Garry
Gethin is becoming very emotional . . .
We see Ffion and Gethin looking sombre,
and also Garry.   Siôn goes on, “Let us take a moment to remember what Sheryl meant to every one of us personally.”
Colin complains about the hard seats
Colin turns to Britt and whispers, “Now I remember why I hated Sunday School – hard seats!”
“One person Sheryl thought the world of was Gethin,” says Siôn, “At Julie’s request, he’s going to pay tribute to a special woman in his life.”
This does not go down well with Anita
Anita looks furious at hearing this, and Gaynor cannot believe it,
"Someone must have rewritten the Ten Commandments!"
remarking, “Someone must have rewritten the Ten Commandments!”
"I can't do this"
Gethin stays in his seat, muttering to Ffion that he cannot do it, but she tells him, “You have to!”
He apprehensively makes his way forward
so he reluctantly gets up and walks to the front, while many accusing eyes are focused upon him.
"I've rented a cottage near Swansea"
Sofia informs Elgan that she has rented a cottage near Swansea;  “A chance to see Gower in all its glory.   A proper conversation is better than hiding behind an e-mail.
"I don't know what to think"
“To be honest, I don’t know what I think.   You suddenly get in touch after all these years.”
"I felt it was time to explain"
He says that he felt it was time to explain some things, and to apologise for the way he was when he came home from Kosovo, almost twenty years ago.
"I'm living with PTSD"
“I’m living with PTSD – I’ve been trying to deal with it for years, but I’ve had some help recently.   That’s why I behaved the way I did back then – locking you out, drinking, being angry.
Sofia is beginning to understand
“I know I refused any help from you, and went further into my shell, and for that, I’m very sorry.”
"Sheryl meant the world to me!"
Gethin hesitantly begins, “Sheryl meant the world to me,” and after sobbing,
Sara finds this inappropriate
which certain of the congregation find inappropriate, continues, “That’s why standing here today is so difficult.
"Why didn't you come with me?"
“I loved Sheryl so much – I couldn’t be without her – couldn’t stand seeing her decide to leave.   Why didn’t you come with me?”
"Realisation is dawning upon Ffion"
Ffion comes to the realisation that he was the one who killed Sheryl;
"If only you had come, this wouldn't have happened!"
he continues, “If only you had come, this wouldn’t have happened!”
"Sher, I'm so sorry!"
Siôn is also looking very concerned as Gethin says, “Sher, I’m so sorry!”
"He did it!"
Ffion whispers, “He did it!”
Gethin is reduced to uncontrollable tears
then as Gethin weeps uncontrollably in front of the coffin,
"I'm telling you – he did it!"
she says it more loudly, “He did it – he killed Sheryl!   I’m telling you – he did it!”
Gethin tries to leave . . .
Everyone looks horrified, and Gethin tries to rush out of the chapel,
. . . and is told he has to confess he killed Sheryl
but Ffion stops him and insists, “You have to confess, like you confessed to me earlier –you killed Sheryl!”   When he runs from the chapel, Dani follows him, after first accusing Ffion of being drunk.
Kath shouts at Ffion that she should have some respect and leave as well;  Julie is in a terrible state.
Dani goes after him . . .
By the flowerbed in the street, Dani catches up with him
. . . and takes him back to the Deri flat
and insists that he come with her, and everything will be all right.
"You have to tell the police everything!"
Ffion hurries back towards home, but Rhys stops her, and pleads, “You have to go to the police and tell them everything!   Ffion, please – for Dad!   You’re his only hope!”
"That's what I must do!"
She agrees that is what she will do, and they go back to Cysgod y Glyn.
"I'm glad you can tell me at last"
Sofia is glad that Elgan can tell her at last, and he says it is a pity he did not try to talk more at the time;
"I'm glad you've found some support"
now she understands why he could not, and she is glad that he has found someone to support him.
"I've got a lot to thank Gaynor for"
“Her name’s Gaynor – she’s the headteacher of the local school,” he says, “I’ve got a lot to thank her for.”
Sofia says that she must be going, as she has to be in the cottage by 5:00pm;
"It's been very nice to see you"
“It’s been very nice to see you,” he says, and she replies that as she is in the area for two weeks, perhaps they could meet up for lunch or supper.
"Send me an e-mail"
He would like that, so she tells him to e-mail her.
Gethin is really dejected
Gethin, looking totally dejected, sits in the Deri flat, and Dani brings him a whisky,
The whisky goes straight down
which he downs in one gulp.   “I can’t believe that Ffion did such thing,” she fumes,
"Accusing you like that in front of everyone!"
“I know she’s been hurt, but she had no right!   Accusing you in front of everyone, just because she’s angry with you!”
"This isn't how I planned it"
Gethin tells her, “This isn’t how things were meant to be – this isn’t how I planned it – this isn’t how I wanted you to find out.”   Dani does not understand what he means,
"Ffion was right – I killed Sheryl!"
so he spells it out, “Ffion was right – I killed Sheryl!”
