Rhys is introduced to Elgan

Gaynor has a visitor at Llwyncelyn – Hywel’s son, Rhys; she introduces him to Elgan, who regrets the circumstances in which they meet.

"Shall I cook you some breakfast?"

Gaynor will cook Rhys some breakfast, and he relates that his journey was very long, with delays everywhere.

"I think you should stay with us"

She wants Rhys to stay with them, commenting, “A lot of people think Hywel’s guilty – Sheryl’s mother for one – we argued over Esther yesterday, and now her brother is here.

Rhys is not keen to see his father in prison

“I’ve arranged for us to go and see your father tomorrow, if that suits you.”

"I won't mention the holiday again . . ."

Garry tells Dani, “I don’t like it when we don’t talk – I won’t mention the holiday again,

". . . unless you want to discuss it"

“unless you want to discuss it.”

"Let's discuss why you are so desperate to go away"

She would like to discuss why he is desperate to go away for so long, but he says he is not desperate, so they agree to forget it.

Britt detects some marital tension here

Britt comes in and asks, “Trouble in paradise?”

"Dani doesn't want to go!"

Garry moans that he wants to take Dani away on holiday, but she does not want to go, saying that she is worried about leaving Gethin, and Sheryl’s funeral, whenever that is.

"One of her best friends has been murdered"

Britt reminds him that one of Dani’s best friends has been murdered, and that friend was in a relationship with her brother, so it is a stressful time for her.

"Dani is so selfish!"

He argues that is why he wanted to take her away, and she advises him to give her time. He describes Dani as selfish,

"Stop behaving like a spoilt brat!"

and Britt explodes, “Chester’s bad enough, without you behaving like a spoilt brat! Sort it out!”

Esther meets Rhys

As Elgan washes up the breakfast things, Gaynor brings Esther downstairs and introduces her to Rhys.

At Maes-y-Deri, Mark cannot understand why Ricky wanted to take Non with him, and not his mother and father.

"Non won't bounce around and scream!"

“Non won’t bounce around and scream when he gets his results, will she?” Kath responds. Then they come home,

"Ricky is rather disappointed with his results"

and Non says that Ricky is rather disappointed with his results.

Kath reassures him that the result is not important, only the fact that he did his best;

"I only got two As!"

Ricky tells them, “I’m gutted – I only got two As – the other one was an A star!” As predicted, Mark starts bouncing

Mark is delighted

and hugs Ricky; Kath is very impressed with the results, and Ricky admits it is a great relief.

"Don't make an enemy of Julie"

Rhys suggests to Gaynor that she should not make an enemy of Julie; “She might have a case to have Esther. I don’t want Dad to worry about that on top of everything.” Gaynor agrees to contact Julie and arrange for her to see Esther at Llwyncelyn.

Rhys has struck up a friendship with Esther

Rhys would be only too glad to look after Esther while Gaynor goes to school.

Chester is feeling sorry for himself . . .

Chester is lounging on the sofa,

. . . as he sees his friends' results

looking on his phone at the congratulations being heaped on his schoolfriends for their results, and looks downhearted.

"Better get the champagne on ice!"

Elgan is now in the Deri, and sees on his phone that the school had excellent results, so warns Garry to prepare some champagne. He also asks if Garry is in a better mood today, and admits that he is not, as now they have Hywel’s son staying with them as well.

"You should support Gaynor a bit more"

Garry points out that he and Gaynor were close, and suggests that Elgan should support her bit more.

Out in the garden at Maes-y-Deri

We have our first look at the back garden of Maes-y-Deri, as the Jones family prepare to celebrate Ricky’s results; “I’m so proud,” announces Debbie,

"A son of mine going to study Law in Cardiff!"

“A son of mine going to study Law in Cardiff!”

"No, give it to Non, Gran!"

Kath brings a postcard for Non – from DJ.

"DJ is having a good time"

Non reads, “He says he’s enjoying the cruise – the boat’s nice, Barcelona was nice, and he says thank you for encouraging him to go on holiday – he’ll see me when he gets back.”

"You're on a promise there, good girl!"

Kath rather crudely remarks that Non is on a promise there.

They drink a toast

They all drink a toast to Ricky.

"Chester got a B in his Welsh exam"

Ffion comes to see Britt in the Deri, to advise her that Chester got a B in his Welsh exam. “So he should go back to school and carry on,” is Britt’s optimistic response, and FF hopes that the result will give him some confidence.

"He needs to start making an effort!"

“It’s not confidence that Chester needs – he needs to start making an effort!” Britt insists, but Garry suggests that she should leave him alone and let him make his own decision. Britt cannot resist going home.

Ffion asks for an orange juice, and detects some tension behind the bar,

"At least, give it some thought"

as Garry tells Dani he is really sorry, and wonders if she will at least give the holiday some thought. “Not this again!” she groans, and he goes on that he loves her, Gwern and Seren more than anything;

"I want to spend time with you"

he wants to spend time with her.

"You do – we live together!"

Dani growls, “You do spend time with us – we live together – what difference would a holiday make? It’s just a holiday.”

"Why don't you want to go away with me?"

With tears in his eyes, Garry demands why she does not want to go away with him; she replies, “I do – just not this week – and not for months.”

"You think what happened to Sheryl was my fault!"

“You’re scared of going away with me on holiday,” he alleges, “Because you think what happened to Sheryl was my fault!” She denies that she thinks any such thing, but he is sure he can see it in her eyes.

Chester is eating crisps . . .

Chester is eating crisps when Britt returns home

. . . when told of his exam result

and says, “You know that exam you sat? You got a B – maybe you should go back to school.” He points out that most of his friends got As,

"What if a B is the best I can do?"

and predicts that a B is the best he can do; “I don’t like failing,” he tells her.

"You can go to university, like your friends"

She insists that if he goes back to school and gets better results next year, he can go to university like his friends.

"I'm not good enough, Mam"

“I’m not good enough, Mam – and no-one’s going to employ me – I don’t have skills or experience. And people don’t like me!”

Britt asks why he does not clean up the flat, or at least tidy up after himself, and he tells her to stop nagging. “It’s better than sitting there, doing nothing and being useless!” she snarls, and he comments that he is an expert at that.

"Think of other people for once!"

Losing her temper, she shouts, “Think of other people for once!” and he jumps up, declaring that he wishes she would shut up, and goes to his room.

Gaynor celebrates the school's results

In the Deri, Elgan has provided champagne to celebrate the school’s good results; Garry is pleased that Elgan has heeded his advice to support his partner.

"There's profit in champagne, isn't there?"

“I bet you are – there is profit in champagne, isn’t there?” Elgan replies, caustically.

"Julie wants to go and see Esther now!"

Gaynor has had a message that Julie wants to go and see Esther now, and she is worried that she should not come face to face with Rhys; “It’s not right that they should meet while Esther is there – what if she tried to take her?”

"Rhys can handle it"

She wants Elgan to go home to keep an eye on Esther and Julie, and he reluctantly acquiesces.

Debbie expresses how proud she is

The party in the garden at Maes-y-Deri is in full swing, with several of Ricky’s friends there; Debbie is embarrassing Ricky, but she says she cannot help being proud.

Chester gets his first can

Then another young man, Chester arrives, and helps himself to a can while Debbie makes a speech.

“I just want to say how proud I am of Ricky, the first person in the family to go to university!”

"Hang on – Stacey went to university!"

Kath interrupts her at this point, pointing out that Stacey went to university. Debbie insists, “No-one in my family has been to university –

He got through that can pretty quickly

“not many went to school – but I always knew that Ricky would be amazing – he was toilet trained by 18 months!”

"Mam, you are so embarrassing!"

Ricky is even more embarrassed, as she rambles on, “It’s been one success after another, “and he’s made his mother very proud! I hope you enjoy your holiday in Spain.” Then, turning to look at Non,

"We might have a wedding to celebrate!"

she adds, “We might have a wedding to celebrate as well – Non and DJ!”

Chester is now on his second

In the background, Chester grabs another can.

"Look, it wasn't your fault, Garry"

In the Deri, Dani reassures Garry that what happened to Sheryl was not his fault, and she is not afraid of going away with him – she just does not think it is a good idea.

"It would be easier to forget everything in another country"

“I thought it would be easier to forget everything in another country,” he tells her, but she says that he cannot escape his own mind.

"We'll get through this together, here"

“All our friends and family are here – they need us and we need them,” she goes on, “We’ll get through this together, here, where we belong,” and they kiss.

Ffion warmly greets Rhys

Ffion walks in, and is amazed to see Rhys; he embraces her, and is so sorry about what happened. She also is concerned about him and Esther.

"Are you one of the people who thinks Dad's guilty?"

“Are you one of the people who thinks Dad’s guilty?” he asks,

"I don't know what to think"

but Ffion does not know what to think; he is going to see his father tomorrow, and is not looking forward to it. Ffion has to hurry off to fetch Arwen and wishes him good luck for tomorrow.

"Elgan was there, watching me!"

Kath returns home to find Julie looking downhearted; she reports that when she went to see Esther, Elgan was there, watching her, and she does not think that Esther knows who she is. “Elgan was making me feel so awkward,

"I only had a couple of cwtches!"

“I had a couple of cwtches, but then I had to leave her.” Kath decides that the two of them are going for a drink.

Chester is now proverbially 'legless'

At that moment, Ricky comes in, supporting an inebriated Chester, who is hardly able to stand; Ricky says that he needs a coffee,

"No coffee – you're going home!"

but Kath is adamant that for him it is too late for coffee; “Come on – home!” she roars, and demands what is wrong with him as they go out of the front door.

Elgan reads to Esther

Elgan seems to be getting on very well with Esther when Gaynor and Rhys return;

"I don't feel like celebrating!"

Gaynor does not feel in the mood to go out for a celebration with Elgan, and feels tired, with the prospect of visiting Hywel tomorrow. Rhys will go for a lie down, as the jetlag is catching up with him.

"Don't worry – he'll be found not guilty"

Gaynor tries to reassure him that his father will be found not guilty, but when he has gone upstairs,

"You shouldn't be getting his hopes up"

Elgan advises against getting his hopes up: “From what I’ve heard, Hywel is guilty.”

Gaynor cannot believe that he thinks this

Gaynor is staggered that he thinks this.

The inebriate is delivered to the Deri

Britt is shocked when Kath struggles into the Deri, holding up the drunken Chester; “He’s been drinking other people’s beer!” Kath moans, but Britt maintains she should not have let him drink so much.
