Hywel is becoming tired of waiting

Hywel has been sitting in the interview room, and when the DI comes in, complains that he has been kept waiting;  

"You have the right to leave whenever you want"

she replies, “You have the right to leave whenever you want, but I’m sure you, like us, want to know who did this to Sheryl.   Where were you on the evening of Friday, 20 July?”

"I've already told you"

He stresses that he has already told her;  “I watched a film, fell asleep on the sofa, woke up and went to bed, on my own.”   

"So you don't have an alibi, then"

The DI concludes that he does not have an alibi, and he argues that he could not leave Esther on her own.   

"When was the last time you spoke to Sheryl?"

The next question is, “When was the last time you spoke to Sheryl?” and he replies he went to see her earlier that evening and arranged with a friend to babysit;  this was about ten o’clock.   She wonders why he did not simply ring Sheryl, 

"I wanted to talk to her face to face"

but he points out that things were not good between them, and he wanted to talk to her face to face.   

"Didn't you phone her at 10:50pm?"

“Didn’t you phone her at 10:50pm?” DI Davies asks, “There is a record of a call from your phone at that time.   

Hywel is floundering now

Rather flustered, he says that perhaps Esther was playing with his phone, but he does not know.   

Well, he does not look as if he believes Hywel

The DI’s colleague does not look as if he believes Hywel.

"You stand to benefit from Sheryl's death"

“You stand to benefit from Sheryl’s death – as her husband, won’t you get her assets?” the DI enquires, “Had you taken out endowment policies?   So you married Sheryl, aware of her affair, and then ended the marriage after a few weeks.   But because Sheryl died before you divorced, you’re likely to do very well.”

"You said I can go, and that's what I'm doing!"

He objects that this is nonsense, and she is making it sound as if he were involved in Sheryl’s death;  “You said I can go, and that’s what I’m doing!”

They have had a very short holiday in Cornwall

Iolo and Tyler are back home, regretting that they did not stay for a few more days, but they had to come back for their niece’s party.   Tyler goes into the kitchen to make a cup of tea 

Our one and only sight of Caradog the mouse

and gasps with fright, as he sees a mouse scuttle across the floor. 

"There might be a nest!"

“I’m phoning the council – there might be a nest!” he squeals, but Iolo points out that they should try mousetraps first, so Tyler hurries off to get some, 

"I already have mousetraps, Ty!"

despite Iolo’s protestations that he already has them.

"Can Esther stay here a bit longer?"

Hywel comes into the Deri, where the preparations for Carol’s party have begun;  he asks Garry if they will keep Esther there while he goes home for a shower and a nap.   

"The police think I was involved"

He admits that things are not really all right;  “It’s obvious that the police think I was involved in her death, with the circumstantial evidence and no alibi.”   

"Most of the time the partner did it"

Dani says they always suspect the partner, because most of the time they are responsible, which does nothing to reassure Hywel, and he hopes that she is right that it is nothing personal.   He goes home.

Cadno is packing a case . . .

In the shop flat bedroom, Cadno is packing things into a suitcase and reminds Eifion to go and see the new suppliers, as they have a lot of interesting produce;  

. . . and gives Eifion his instructions . . .

“Eileen has given us a list of goods she wants us to sell in the shop.”   

. . . who is not at all interested

He does not seem to be at all interested in what she said.

“You don’t mind that we’re going away, do you?” she asks, 

"You deserve a break from me!"

and he says that she deserves a break – living with him is not easy at the moment.   

"The antidepressants will help"

She confidently asserts, “I’m sure you’ll feel better when the antidepressants kick in – you’re not having any side-effects, are you?” 

"I haven't started taking them"

but he admits he has not started taking them yet, not relishing the thought of all those chemicals.

She assures him that it is only something to help him in the short term, and if he will not take them, he will have to talk to someone;  “I’m not being insensitive, but we have the children – and a business to run.”

"I don't want the business – I want to leave!"

He emphasises that he does not want the business – he wants to leave this place, but she insists that he must take the tablets or see a counsellor.   He has to start helping himself:  

"Sitting here won't do any good"

“Sitting here, pondering, won’t do you any good.”

Hywel stands forlornly . . .

In another bedroom, Hywel stands, looking forlorn;  he sits disconsolately on the bed, 

. . . looks at a reminder of the better times . . .

looks at a picture of the three of them 

. . . and breaks down

and weeps bitterly.   

"Ive already set a trap"

Tyler comes back with a supply of mousetraps, and Iolo tells him he has already set one;  “In the corner – that’s where Caradog was.   It’s a humane trap.”   

"You call that a trap?"

Tyler is insistent that he will use some of the dozen which he has purchased as well.

“A dozen?   What are we catching – a velociraptor?” demands Iolo, but is told they need to sort out the problem before it gets worse.  Iolo refuses to use those traps;  

"I don't want to find a beheaded Caradog!"

“I don’t want to come downstairs tomorrow, with a beheaded Caradog waiting for me!   

"You go and stay with Dani, then"

“You can go and stay with Dani until he’s caught!”

Tyler refuses to eat in the house, even though Iolo has washed and disinfected the place.

"What exactly did you tell the police?"

Garry goes to see Hywel, and wants to know exactly what he told the police;  he is told, “That the last time I spoke to her was about ten o’clock, when I went to see her.   

"They know about the phone call"

“They know about the phone call – I told them Esther had accidentally phoned her.”   Garry tells him to leave it at that.

"I can't believe I pushed her so far!"

“I can’t believe I pushed her so far!” Hywel groans, 

"You have to get some rest"

but Garry tells him is not his fault, and advises him to get some rest.

"The Deri is looking great for the party"

Tyler tells Dani that the Deri is looking great for the party;  she hopes, “Sheryl is looking down on us and smiling.”   Eifion comes across and wants another pint;  

"Why is the shop closed?"

when Iolo mentions that the shop is closed, 

"I don't care two hoots!"

Eifion makes it quite clear that he could not care two hoots.   

He says that Cadno and the boys have gone on holiday;  “They might as well get used to living without their father!”   
Iolo suggest that he ought to go home, and Dani is of the opinion he has had enough, 

"All you're getting is a coffee!"

and all he is getting is a coffee.   She does not want him spoiling Seren’s party, so he tells them to get stuffed and staggers out of the pub, 

Eifion staggers out

just as Garry comes in, followed by DI Davies, who wants a word with both him and Dani;  they go upstairs.

"When did you last see Sheryl?"

Dani is asked when she last saw Sheryl, and replies that it was on Friday afternoon in the salon, when they had a group of women in for the works, 

"She wasn't great"

and she was not great, with the divorce and the custody of Esther.

“So things weren’t very good between her and Mr Llywelyn?” the DI enquires, 

"There was something weird that happened"

and Dani goes on that something weird happened;  “Sheryl was upset because Hywel had stopping her seeing Esther –  then, the next thing, he turned up at the salon with Esther, as if nothing was wrong, and asked Sheryl to look after her.   Fifteen minutes later, he came back and took Esther away again – 

"That was the last time I saw her!"

“she ran after him, and that was the last time I saw her.   I shall always ask myself if there was something I could have done to help her.   She worshipped that little girl!”

"Hywel is a good father"

Garry adds that so does Hywel, and he is a good father.   

"Where were you from nine o'clock?"

They are asked where they were that night from nine o’clock onwards.   

"We were both here in the flat"

Garry immediately replies that they were both in the flat;  “I went out earlier to see a client, then I was home all night.”   
Asked for any ideas about who would want to kill Sheryl, Dani is horrified that it could be someone they know.   She thought it could be a burglary gone wrong or something.

"Whoever killed her probably knew her very well"

“We can’t be absolutely certain, but in all likelihood, whoever killed Sheryl her very well,” the DI says, as she gets up to leave, and wonders if Dani knows where her brother, Gethin, is.    She replies that he is in Swansea, visiting his son, and that the relationship with Sheryl was over.   

"Please ask him to contact me"

The DI leaves her card, requesting that Gethin contacts them, 

"It was more like eleven when you came in"

and as they go downstairs, Dani asks Garry why he lied;  “You weren’t here at nine o’clock – it was more like eleven when you came in.”   

He comes up with a rather nebulous explanation

He replies that maybe he visited Hywel, and then had some work to do in the garage.   Now he will go to fetch Seren, as they do not want her to be late for her own party.

Alun has been summoned to check up on Eifion 

Eifion sits, looking very downcast, when he has a visit from Alun, who has been summoned by Iolo;  “He said you were drunk and disorderly in the Deri.”   

"I haven't told Cadno yet!"

Eifion admits that he has not told Cadno yet;  “We argued, and she threatened to take the boys away if I was seeing another woman.   If only she knew the truth.”   

"I know exactly how you feel"

Alun sympathises that he knows exactly how Eifion feels.   

“I’m so scared, not just about Cadno and the boys, but I’ve lived like this for so long, and so far it’s worked out.   

"What if everybody hates me?"

“If I tell the truth, what is life going to be like on the other side?   What if everybody hates me?   All the lies, the deception.”   

"I miss you so much, Alun"

After a pause, he goes on, “I miss you so much,” 

They hug

and embraces Alun.

In the Deri the party is in full swing, and Dani tells Garry go to go and get Seren;  

"Thank you all for coming"

she announces, “Thank you all for coming – I know that perhaps it feels wrong to have a party, but I think that Sheryl would want us to do this.   

Dani proposes a toast . . .

“So I like to propose a toast, to one of the kindest and most beautiful people I’ve ever met – Sheryl!”

. . . and then reveals the change of name – to Seren

Then she goes on, “Garry and I have decided that our baby’s name will be Seren now.”   

Cadno asks if Bobi and Arthur can stay

Cadno comes in and asks if Bobi and Arthur can join in;  she wants Dani to keep an eye on them for an hour, so she can talk to Eifion.   

"Eifion had too much to drink"

Dani warns that he was here earlier, and had too much to drink.

Cadno was supposed to be taking the boys away, but she cannot;  

"I'm afraid of leaving him on his own!"

“To be honest, I’m afraid of leaving him on his own!”

Meanwhile, Eifion is having a 'romp' with Alun . . .

Meanwhile, Eifion is in bed with Alun, confident that Cadno is out of the way for a while.   

. . . but is panic-stricken when he hears Cadno's voice

He receives a serious shock when he hears her voice in the flat, and footsteps approaching.

She finds evidence of someone else in the flat

He hurries to meet her; she has found an unfamiliar jumper, and concludes that someone else is also in the flat.

"I went for a lie-down"

Eifion maintains that he was not feeling too well, and went for a lie-down;     “You’ve got another woman – I was right!”

Then she discovers the awful truth

She pushes past him and heads to the bedroom, where she finds Alun, who has just got dressed;  

"I didn't want you to find out like this!"

Eifion insists he did not want her finding out like this, 

"Tell her the truth, Eifion"

and Alun encourages him to tell the truth.   “I think you’d better go!” Eifion tells him,

"I know this is a terrible shock"

 and appreciates that this is a shock for Cadno, but he never wanted her to find out.

"How long has this been going on?"

She demands how long this has been going on, and he maintains it is only a couple of months, and he is so sorry that she found out this way.   

"You're not gay!"

“You’re not gay!” she shouts, but he merely whimpers that he is sorry.   “I was worried you had another woman, but all the time you’ve been sleeping with another man!   

"Get out of my life – and never come back!"

“Get out of this flat, and out of my life!   Don’t ever come back!”
