5 February 2018

The emergency team swing into action
The emergency team rush in, and the doctor says they need to work fast;
"What's happening?"
as the nurse inserts an airway, Debbie demands what is happening.
"She needs a VQ scan!"
It is decided that Non needs an immediate VQ scan, and she is wheeled away.
"What's going on, Debbie?"
Kath sees all the activity and asks what has happened;
"She was coughing up blood"
Debbie explains that she was coughing up blood, and decides that they are not going to tell Mark anything.
"We say nothing – right?"
“The last thing Mark needs is to worry about Non.   We say nothing – right?”
"Boeuf Bourguignon for dinner"
Jim comes into the shop flat, and finds that Eileen is preparing Boeuf Bourguignon for dinner tonight.
"No, don't open that lid!"
She warns him not to open the lid of the slow cooker, and not to be late home tonight.
"Oh, I'm supposed to be at APD!"
Jim suddenly remembers that he is supposed to be at APD, waiting for an important phone call about a tender.   “Dai is at ‘an important meeting’, and I’m supposed to be listening out for the phone.”
Not a very welcome phone call
He hurries away, and then Eileen receives a phone call;  when she finds out who it is, her face falls.
"You look like I feel, Dani"
Dai is actually in the Deri, remarking to Dani, “You look like I feel – I didn’t sleep a wink last night, worrying about this tender.”   Dani is having difficulty with the beer pump, and he informs her, “You need an experienced barman, who changes the barrel before it runs out.
"Look, John's dying of thirst!"
“You don’t know whether you’re coming or going – look, John’s dying of thirst.”
Dani screams at him, “You’re right, Dai!
"Get out, both of you!"
“Do you know what?   I’m closing up!”   They are the only customers in the pub, and she orders them out, with Dai protesting that he has not finished his pint.
"It's all right, Carol"
She tries to calm baby Carol, then leaves a phone message for Garry;
"Garry – Carol needs you!"
“Where are you?   I need you at home – Carol needs you – please.”
Carol expresses her opinion
Carol looks decidedly unhappy, as Dani reassures her that Daddy will be home soon.
"What if he wants to see Non?"
Kath asks what happens if Mark wants to see Non;  Debbie replies that they will be told when Non is stable.
"Why don't we go and visit Non?"
Then Colin joins them, and wonders why they are outside the glass, looking in at Mark.   “Why don’t we go and visit Non?” he asks, “She must be awake by now.”
There is no answer,
"What's wrong?   You're scaring me!"
and he demands if anything is wrong, as they are scaring him;
"She was coughing up blood"
Kath tells him that she has had to go for a scan, as she was coughing up blood.   They must not tell Mark or he would get upset;  Colin insists that they must tell him,
Debbie is insistent Mark will not be told
but Debbie’s mind is made up.
“If you won’t tell him, I will!” he declares, but Debbie is quite clear that until they hear that Non is OK, they are not going to say anything.
Mark opens his eyes . . .
Mark opens his eyes and sees
. . . and sees the onlookers
them staring at him.
"Dani's not fit to run a bath, let alone a pub!"
As Dai and John Post stand disconsolately outside the door of the Deri, Britt comes running towards them.   “Dani’s not fit to run a bath, let alone a pub!” moans Dai,    She’s thrown us into the street, and I’ve only drunk half of my pint.”
Dani has to respond to the hammering on the door
Britt hammers on the door until Dani lets her in;
"I'll report you to trading standards"
Dai is threatening reporting Dani to trading standards,
Dani ushers them out again, but at least Dai has his drink
and after picking up the remains of his pint, he storms off again.
"Customer care, is it?"
“Customer care, is it?” scoffs Britt, but Dani does not want to talk about it, as she is stressed enough as it is.   “You can’t just close the place whenever you like – we’ve got a business to run!” snarls Britt,
"Garry has gone!"
then is informed that Garry has gone.
"And I don't blame him!"
Britt does not blame him, after Dani tried to trick him into raising another man’s child.
"I've got proof – another DNA test"
“I’ve got proof that Garry is Carol’s father,” Dani replies, “And he should be here for her!   Another DNA test!”
"Come on – let's see it, then!"
Britt demands to be shown this proof.
"No, we're a builders' merchant!"
Jim is at his station behind the counter at APD, and when the phone rings he is quick to answer it;  “No, we’re a builders’ merchant,” he says.   Eileen comes in, and enquires if Dai is around.
"What if she wants to live with us?"
She frets, “Sioned phoned – she wants me to visit her – she’s bound to ask about a place to live.   What if she wants to live with us?”
"That's your important meeting, is it?"
At this point, Dai comes in, clutching his half-empty glass, and Jim wonders if that is what his important meeting was.
"Make me a cup of tea, Jim"
Dai instructs him to make a cup of tea, and then to clear up out the back.   Eileen will talk to him later.
"Have you got any news for me?"
Mark asks if they have any news for him,
They cannot think of anything to say
and their evasive answers lead him to believe they are hiding something.
"Has something happened to Non?"
“Has something happened to Non?” he demands.
"There have been complications"
Colin tells him not to worry, but there have been complications;
Colin goes to get some information
he will go now and find a doctor to discover the latest news.   As Debbie and Kath will not tell him anything, Mark threatens to get a nurse to throw them out.
"She started coughing . . ."
“She started coughing,” Debbie begins, “And then got worse.”
"She was coughing up blood"
His mother takes over the story and reveals she was coughing up blood, then the doctor and nurses took her for a scan.
"This is all my fault!"
“You don’t understand, do you?   This is all my fault!” insists Mark, “You sat here for half an hour and did not say a word!   Nurse, nurse, I want these two to leave, please!”
They leave the ward
They comply with his wishes, and Mark lies there, guilt-stricken.
Britt studies the evidence
Britt studies the test result and admits that she agrees with Dani;  “Have you tried phoning him to come back?
"How are you going to cope if he doesn't come back?"
“How are you going to cope if he doesn’t come back?   Right, well, this is what’s going to happen –
"I'm going to run the bar"
“I’m going to run the bar while you look after Carol.   And before you think of it,
"I'm doing this for Carol's sake, not yours!"
“I’m doing this for Carol’s sake, not yours – I don’t want the business to suffer, do I?”   Before she goes downstairs,
Carol seems more contented now
Britt looks at baby Carol,
Dani wonders whether he will come back
and Dani wonders whether he will come back.
Dai's nerves are beginning to fray
Dai is becoming tired of waiting for the phone call, and instructs Jim to make him a coffee;  “My nerves are frayed, waiting for this phone call.”
"What's been ripping up the rubbish bags?"
Jim wonders what is making all the mess out the back, ripping up the rubbish sacks,
and Dai suggests that it may be a dog which smelled a corned beef sandwich that was thrown in the bin.
"What did Eileen want?"
He asks what Eileen wanted earlier, and Jim explains,
"Sioned is soon being released"
“She’s worried – Sioned is about to be released, and Eileen is concerned that she might ask to come and live with us.   I’ve made it clear that it’s not going to happen –
"Is that the right thing to do?"
“but is that the right thing to do?”
At last – the phone call
The phone rings, and this time it is the long-awaited call.
"It's a clot on her lung"
Colin returns alone to see Mark, who says he is going off his head with worry;  Colin reveals, “They say it’s a clot, on her lung.
"All we can do is wait"
“She is in the ICU, the best place for her – now all we can do is wait.”
"I want to see her"
Mark does not want to wait – he wants to see Non, but Colin repeats that there is nothing they can do now but wait.
Mark thanks him for telling the truth, and Colin points out that his mother and Debbie were only thinking of him.
Mark agrees they should come back in
By this time they are waiting outside the window, and Mark agrees that they can come back in.
"We're so sorry, Mark"
They tell him how sorry they are,
"I put Non under too much pressure!"
but Mark realises he put Non under too much pressure, and is sceptical about their assurances that she will be all right.
Britt is trying to do everything in the Deri
Eileen comes into the Deri with a pack of nappies for Dani from the shop, and finds that Britt is trying to do everything single-handed.
"Garry has gone walkabout!"
She explains, “Garry has gone walkabout, and left Dani to run this place – but there we are, that’s when family matters, in a crisis!
"Be there for each other, whether you want to or not"
“Be there for each other, whether you want to or not.”
"You're a lifesaver, Eileen!"
Dani comes down and is grateful to Eileen.   Britt asks when Sioned is being released, adding, “She’s taking advantage!
"When she gets out, will she live with you?"
“When she gets out, will she live with you?”   Eileen is not sure of the answer to that.
APD have been successful
At APD, Dai and Jim are celebrating that they have secured this lucrative job;  “We’re head and shoulders above Jackson Sopworth’s, in price and materials –
"But do you think we've charged enough?"
“do you think we’ve charged enough for the job?   Too late for that – we’ll have to start ASAP.   Of course there is a rush –
"We don't want to pay penalty payments!"
“we don’t want to pay penalty payments for finishing late!   We had better start now.”
"Thank you for this, Britt"
After closing time, Britt is cleaning up in the bar, and Dani comes downstairs;  she thanks Britt for all her work.
"I'm not doing it for you!"
“I’m not doing this for you, but for that baby upstairs,” she replies, “I’ll turn off the lights and lock up now, and I’ll be back tomorrow morning.
"You never know, Garry might be back"
“You never know, Garry might be back.”
After Dani has gone back upstairs, Britt leaves a message for Garry;
"Little Carol needs her father!"
“What’s all this nonsense?   Where are you?   Little Carol needs her father!”
Jim is rather late for dinner
By the time Jim returns home it is past eleven o’clock;  “Dai is like a spinning top since hearing about the tender – he had to get everything ready – tools, plans, everything!”
Then he asks Eileen if she has had any more thoughts about Sioned;
"I'm going to visit her in prison . . ."
he is told, “Yes, I’m going to visit her in prison –
". . . and tell her she can't live here"
and I’m going to make it clear that she cannot come and live with us here!   Do you agree that is best?”
"About time she stood on her own two feet"
He concurs with this, pointing out that it is time she stood on her own two feet, and stopped treading on their toes all the time.
Colin has dropped off
Colin has fallen asleep in the chair next to Non’s bed;  she awakens and calls his name.
"Colin, how is Mark?"
“She asks how Mark is, and he tells her,
"He'll be so glad you're OK!"
“Mark is fantastic, thanks to you.   Hell be so glad that you’re OK –
"I'm going to find a nurse for you"
I’ll go and tell him, but first of all, I’m going to find a nurse for you.
Non can now sleep peacefully
I’m so happy that you’re all right!
