Mathew has a present for Gwern

At Y Felin, Mathew writes a gift tag for his present to Gwern.

The Deri is being readied for the party

One corner of the Deri is being prepared for the birthday party, by Britt and Gwyneth.   

"Gwern is going to have a day to remember!"

When Dani comes downstairs, Britt informs her that they are going to make sure Gwern has a day to remember, 

"Have you heard from Garry?"

and Gwyneth demands if she has heard from Garry.   “It’s his son’s birthday and he’s not here!”   

"He hasn't contacted me"

Dani replies that she has told her many times that he has not contacted her;  “Maybe you should try him again – for Gwern’s sake!” Gwyneth suggests, 

Dani leaves without another word

but Dani simply walks out of the door.

"The new boiler has been installed at last"

Mathew goes to Penrhewl, and tells Eifion that Iolo has finally installed the new boiler at Y Felin.   

"You must feel a bit of a gooseberry!"

Eifion is sure he must feel rather a gooseberry, being there with Kelly and Ed.   

“They haven’t moved in yet – they’re taking things slowly,” Mathew replies, “I came over to see if you and the boys are going to Gwern’s party,” he continues, but is told that as Cadno is away, Eifion does not want to take the boys out.   

"What's this envelope, then?"

Then Mathew finds a brown envelope down the side of the sofa, which causes Eifion some distress;  

"Thank goodness Cadno's not here"

“Thank goodness Cadno’s not here,” he says.

Dani's mood is very subdued

Dani is at the salon, where she fancies some blue or black nail varnish, which Sheryl judges as being a bit gloomy.   

"You could have a Mohican, too!"

Dani’s attention is elsewhere as Sheryl suggests that she could have a Mohican too.   “You haven’t listened to a word I’ve said,” she moans, “Still haven’t heard from Garry, then?”

"They're trying to make me feel guilty about Gwern"

“And to top it off, Gwyneth and Britt are trying to make me feel guilty about Gwern,” Dani says.   When Sheryl comments that Garry is no angel, she points out, “But blood is thicker than water.”

"The Monks' blood is thicker than anything"

“And we all know that the Monks’ blood is thicker than anything,” Sheryl smiles.   Dani enquires if she is doing anything this afternoon, as she does not want to be the odd one out at the birthday party – with Britt and Gwyneth ganging up on her.

Sheryl replies that she has a stocktake to do before the weekend.   

However, after Gethin says he is going to the party . . .

Gethin comes in, having seen Dani being pampered, and she tells him that she is fine, but wants to know if he is coming to the party this afternoon.   “Yes, I’m coming with Arwen,” he replies, 

. . . Sheryl, for some reason, changes her mind

upon which Sheryl suddenly changes her mind and decides to go too.   

"I should have sent this tax return last week"

Eifion has been on the phone, and reports to Mathew that he was supposed to send the cheque to the tax office last week;  

"Now I'm going to get fined!"

“Now I’m going to get fined, but I’ve been busy and it slipped my mind.   Don’t tell Cadno, will you?   I’ll sort it out.”

"How about that land you rent out by the stream?"

“Do you still rent out that land by the stream?” asks Mathew, “Use that money to pay the fine.”   

"I'll buy you a pint" — with what, exactly?

Then he adds, “A pint in the Deri will make you feel better – I’ll pay.   The boys would love to see their friends.”

Eifion wonders why he is so keen to go to the Deri;  

"Is it the fact that Garry won't be there?"

“Is it the fact that Garry won’t be there?”   He agrees that he will be there later.

Gwern is being very industrious

At the Deri, Gwern is doing some colouring;  Dani comes in and tells them they have done a good job.   

"I've got a gift for Gwern"

She has a gift for Gwern, but Britt takes it from her 

"You should not be at the party!"

and informs her that she should not be at the party – not in the circumstances.   “It’s a party for Gwern and his friends!”   

Dani thinks she should retreat upstairs

Dani takes Carol upstairs, and Britt remarks to Gwyneth, “This is her fault – forget about Garry and Dani – 

"We're here for Gwern"

“you and I are here for the party, and for Gwern, and we’re going to enjoy it.”

Elinor will babysit this afternoon

In the café, Tyler reports that Elinor will look after Greta this afternoon, as Iolo says he has to be at the party, 

Iolo has a secret assignment

but will not reveal any further details.   

Mathew is after some information – about Dani, naturally

As soon as Iolo has gone, Mathew sidles across to Tyler, asking about Garry and Dani.

"Dani doesn't want to see you!"

He is told to mind his own business and warned that he is not coming to the party;  “Dani doesn’t want to see you!   

"Stay away from Dani, Carol and the party!"

“A word of advice – stay away from her, Carol and the party!”

Giggles the clown makes his entrance

Later, the party has begun, and Britt announces that the clown has arrived;  “Say hello to Giggles, the clown!”   

The clown picks himself up again from the floor

Iolo, in suitable garb, walks in and immediately falls down, in typical clown-like manner.   

Gwern has made himself scarce

Britt finds Gwern sitting at the foot of the stairs, and tells him that he is missing all the fun, but he does not seem to be concerned.   

“I know you miss Dadi, but he’s gone away to sort things out,” Britt tells him.   

"Where is Dadi?"

He asks where his father is;  the reply is that he is not very far away, 

"He will be back soon"

and will be back before long.   He finally consents to rejoin the party.

"Hiya, Sher!"

Sheryl meets Gethin at the bar, then he goes to speak to Dani;  

Dani is putting on her coat

“The ugly sisters have banished me upstairs for the night,” she explains, and Gethin is outraged, as she has been like a second mother to Gwern.

“I don’t have the energy to argue,” she replies, “Carol is sleeping, so I’m going out!”   

She does not get very far . . . and someone is watching

She has only taken a few steps outside, and we see that Mathew is again watching her, when the baby monitor in her hand springs to life and she returns inside.

"Heads and shoulders, knees and toes!"

The partygoers are being led by Giggles the clown in a chorus of, “Heads and shoulders, knees and toes,” then Gwyneth announces that it is time for food.   

"I was drunk when I agreed to do it!"

Apparently Iolo, when he was drunk, promised Colin that he would play the clown.

An unwelcome figure enters the Deri

Gethin is about to take up some food for Dani when he sees Mathew come in;  

"I told you to stay away!"

Tyler reminds him that he was told to stay away.   

Arthur looks as if he expects some fisticuffs

Mathew argues that he has come in for a pint and has brought a gift for Gwern.   Gethin advises him, “Dani’s not here – and she wouldn’t want to talk to you anyway!”   

The fracas begins to take develop

A brawl develops, with Tyler and Mathew having to be dragged apart, while the children look on.

However, Mathew refuses to leave;  

"Nobody's going to stop me seeing Dani!"

“Nobody’s going to stop me seeing Dani!” he shouts, and in the ensuing melée, 

Eifion is on the receiving end of a punch

Eifion gets punched.

A stentorian voice rings out

Suddenly a voice thunders, “Hey!” and they all stop;  it is Garry, who continues, “What the hell is going on?   

"You're worse than children!"

“You’re worse than children!   Today was supposed to be a special day for Gwern!”   

Gwern is pleased to see his father again

He calls the boy to him, and embraces him.   

They all in turn say sorry to Gwern

Garry orders all the combatants to apologise to Gwern, and tells Mathew to get out;  

Garry advises him to leave right now

“If you’ve got anything in that head of yours, I’d leave right now!”

Hearing the commotion, Dani comes downstairs and is amazed to see Garry;  he sends Gwern back to his mother, 

"Come here, Dani"

and invites Dani to come to him.   

She is very apprehensive

She looks very hesitant, but he hugs her, 

"Some thing in life are more important"

and says, “Some things in life are more important than others – love, family and doing what’s right.   That’s why I’m back.”

"There's a drink behind the bar for you!"

Then he invites the children to enjoy the rest of the party, and informs the adults that there is a drink for them behind the bar.   He tells Dani that there is no need to worry, as he is back now, 

"I'm not going anywhere"

and is not going anywhere.   They go upstairs to see Carol.

Eifion is feeling sorry for himself

Back home at the farm, Eifion is concerned about his injury, and wonders who Tyler thinks he is;  

"Tyler's just an idiot!"

Mathew describes him as just an idiot.   “So are you – causing trouble at a kids’ party!” shouts Eifion.

Mathew argues that he only went to speak to Dani, and that Tyler started the fight;  he presumes that they are also keeping this from Cadno, 

This will be rather obvious to Cadno

but Eifion wonders how he can with the bruise on his face.   “No-one touches me like that!   That Tyler had better look out!”

Carol is oblivious to all the goings-on

Garry looks at Carol in her cot and remarks on how peaceful and happy she is.   

"I'm sure she's glad to have her father back"

Dani is sure that she is glad to have her father back, “And me,” she adds.   

He gives Carol a cuddle

He picks up the baby, then announces that he is going for a lie down.   

"I'll make a meal later"

“I’ll make us a meal later,” Dani suggests, “And we can talk.”   

"I want steak with all the trimmings"

Garry states  that he wants a steak with all the trimmings, and she agrees to do this, as well as get a bottle of wine from the bar.   She thanks him for coming back.

"It's too quiet up there"

Downstairs, Britt thinks that it is too quiet up there and wants to go to investigate, but Gwyneth insists that she stay here and help to clear up.   

"You should be ashamed of yourself, Tyler!"

They tell Tyler that he should be ashamed of himself, and Iolo points out that Tyler is sorry.

“No I’m not sorry!” Tyler snarls, “Dani is my sister and someone has to look after her.”   He walks out of the Deri.   

Gethin finds Sheryl in the corner

Gethin joins Sheryl on the sofa in the corner;  Arwen has gone to a friend’s house for a sleepover.

“Sorry I haven’t seen you all night,” he apologises, 

"I wanted to – but not tonight, sorry"

“I wanted to – but not tonight, sorry.”   She points out that they do not want to draw attention to themselves.   

"Not tonight, sorry!"

“Do you fancy leaving now?” he enquires, and she also responds that she does not, tonight – but she is free next week.

Dani prepares dinner

Upstairs, Dani is busy cooking 

Garry dumps bags of her clothes on the floor

when Garry walks in and ceremonially dumps two black sacks on the floor, 

"That's your stuff"

which he explains contain her stuff.   

"I don't want your things – or you – in our bedroom"

As he pours himself a glass of wine, he goes on, “I don’t want your things – or you – in our bedroom any more.   I don’t want anything to do with you.”

"You can't do this, Garry!"

She protests that he cannot do this, and demands where she is going to go, to which he answers, “The spare room.”   She reminds him what he said downstairs earlier;  

"Did you think I was serious?"

“The cwtch and the kisses?” he replies, “Did you think I was serious?   To everyone out there, we are still a happily married couple, but in here, I don’t want anything to do with you.   You’re only my child’s mother now.”

"Please, Garry"

She pleads with him, 

"Don't touch me ever again!"

but he warns her, “Don’t touch me ever again!”
