Diane calls the police
Diane retreats into the farmyard and takes out her phone.
"You have to be absolutely sure!"
Iolo tells Tyler, “Thinking that you remember isn’t good enough – you have to be absolutely certain.”
"Liv was desperate – more desperate than usual"
Things are now coming back to Tyler;  he remembers that Liv was there asking for money – she was desperate, more desperate than usual.   “Then she pushed me and I fell!”
Iolo remarks that she must have been really worried about him if she just walked away,
"I don't think she was the only one"
and is about to phone the police when Tyler stops him.   “I don’t think she was the only one – I’m not sure, but I think someone else attacked me too.
"I'm trying to remember!"
“I’m trying to remember!”
Bobi and Arthur are home from school
At Penrhewl, Cadno has brought the boys home from school, and Bobi presents a picture he has made to his father.   A car comes into the farmyard;  “What on earth are they doing here?” wonders Eifion, as he sees that it is DS Davies and a constable,
"They haven't just dropped in for a cup of tea!"
“They haven’t just dropped in for a cup of tea!”
"I'd like Miss Richards to come to the station"
The DS announces, “Catrin Richards, we want a word – we’ve received new information about the death of Linda Harding.   I’d like Miss Richards to come to the station.”
Cadno is not happy about this . . .
Cadno is put into the police car, and she looks very worried,
. . . and neither is Eifion
as does Eifion.
"Someone came out of the shadows"
Tyler recalls, “I was walking home, and someone came out of the shadows shouting at me.   They came closer and closer –
"They tried to start a fight, saying it was my fault"
“they pushed me and tried to start a fight, saying it was my fault.”
"It was Eifion – angry about the purse business!"
He suddenly realises that it was Eifion;  “He was shouting at me – he was angry about the business with Sara’s purse –
"He hit me and I fell backwards"
“he hit me and I fell backwards.   He walked away and I got up, but I was fine.
"Then Liv turned up!"
“And then Liv turned up.   I refused to give her any money, she pushed me and that’s when I hit my head.”
He goes in search of Liv
Iolo insists that he has to report them both, but Tyler is adamant that he has to go and see Liv.   He promises that she will get help;  “We know where Steve lives – she won’t be far from there.”
Diane comes home
Diane arrives home at Bryntirion, and checks to see if DJ is there;  “Sit down, love,” she begins, “I don’t know how to tell you this.”
"This is about Non, is it?"
He assumes that something else has happened with Non, but she goes on, “This is about your mother –
"I've found out who gave your mother the tablets"
I’ve found out who gave her those tablets on the day she died – Cadno!”
"Oh, she's been gossiping, has she?"
“It’s obvious she’s been gossiping,” says DJ,
"You knew?"
and Diane realises that he already knew all about it and said nothing.
"I didn't want you and Dad to get hurt!"
“I didn’t want anyone to get hurt – you and Dad, especially!”
The questioning begins
At the police station, Cadno is asked when she last saw Linda Harding alive, and she is not sure;  “Possibly that morning – I used to visit her regularly,
"She got weaker each time"
“and she got weaker each time, but her spirits were surprisingly good.   She was a very strong character.”
"She only helped Mam"
At Bryntirion, DJ points out that all Cadno did was to help;  “She did what I couldn’t!   Mam wanted to to die with dignity, and all that Cadno did was to help her.   She fetched the tablets, that’s all.”
"But it was illegal, DJ"
Diane is quite adamant that it was illegal.
"Did you see any tablets there?"
The DS asks if Cadno saw any tablets on her final visit;  she replies that there must have been tablets there, as Linda was a very sick woman.
"Did you help her take them?"
“Did you fetch them for her?” DS Davies enquires, “Did you help her take them?   Are you absolutely sure?   I think you know more than you’re willing to say.
"I put them on the table and then left"
Cadno admits, “Linda asked me to fetch a bottle she’d hidden – I didn’t know what they were, and I didn’t ask.   I put them on the bedside table and then I left.
"That was what Linda wanted"
“That was what Linda wanted”
"Thanks to you and your big mouth!"
DJ angrily exclaims, “Thanks to you and your big mouth, Cadno could face years in prison!”   Diane replies that she should have thought of that before doing it.   He snarls, “And what about me?   I knew about it but did nothing – if this comes out, perhaps I will be the one in prison!”
"Interview terminated at 4:00pm"
DS Davies terminates the interview at 4:00pm and tells Cadno that she is free to go,
"The investigations will continue"
but investigations will continue;  they will re-interview the main witnesses.
"If there is sufficient evidence . . ."
“If there is sufficient evidence to suggest you did assist Linda Harding, then you’ll face charges of assisted suicide,” the DS advises her, “You could face a considerable sentence, perhaps imprisonment,
Cadno is advised to appoint a solicitor
“so it is best if you appoint a solicitor.”
Liv takes a while to open the door
Tyler has tracked down Liv, and bangs on the door;  she is in a drug induced stupor, but eventually staggers to the door
"Ty, what are you doing here?"
to let him in.   He comes straight to the point,
"You attacked me – I could have died!"
“You attacked me – you pushed me, ran away and left me on the ground – I could have died!”
All she wants to do is sleep
She lies back down on her bed.
Cadno is returned to Penrhewl
Cadno is brought home by the police,
"I've nothing to say to you, Judas!"
and tells Eifion, “I’ve got nothing to say to you, Judas!   If you didn’t report me, who did?   The boys?   The dog?   At least, be man enough to admit you did it!”
"I didn't report you, Cadno!"
He stedfastly denies any such thing.
Liv knows that Tyler would have refused to give her money;
"Nobody's going to give me money!"
“Nobody’s going to give me money to buy heroin!” she slurs,
"You have to come off the drugs, once and for all!"
and he replies that is why she has to come off the drugs, once and for all.   “I’ve tried but I can’t,” she whines, “I regretted attacking you straightaway – that’s why I went to the hospital, to make sure you were OK.   That’s why I’ve been phoning.   I didn’t say anything, because I was scared you will phone the police and send me to prison.”
"I really want you to get better"
He reminds her that she left him to die, but he really wants her to get better.   She says that she loves him.
"You're the only one who could have done it!"
Cadno shouts, “Prove you didn’t do it!”   Eifion protests that he would never reported her to the police, but she insists he is the only one who could have done it.
DJ arrives with an explanation
Just at that moment, DJ arrives, in the rain, and says he heard what happened,
"Diane heard you talking"
revealing that Diane contacted the police.   “She overheard you talking earlier –
"You left your purse in the Deri"
“Cadno left her purse in the Deri, and she came to return it.”
"I wonder if Diane realises . . ."
Cadno apologises to Eifion for doubting him, and he wonders if Diane knows that Cadno could go to jail for this.
"I'll do my best to prevent that"
DJ will do his best to prevent that from happening, and will speak on her behalf.
DJ expresses his disgust with Diane, opening old wounds;
"I want to remember Mam as she was"
“I want to remember Mam as she was – not point the finger towards the people who helped her.”
"I'm going to help you"
Tyler assures Liv, “I’m going to help you, I promise, because I’m your big brother.”   She replies that she is not five any more, but he continues,
"I'll make sure you get help"
“I shall make sure you get the help you need – and leaving here is the first step, OK?”
She wants to come and live with him in Cwmderi, as she was happy there and felt safe,
"That's not possible, Liv!"
but he insists that is not possible.   Then there is a knock on the door;  it is the police,
"I am arresting you on suspicion of GBH"
and Liv is told, “I am arresting you on suspicion of GBH.”
"Tyler, you said you'd help me!"
Tyler argues that he did not have any option but to ring them, and that he is helping her.
DJ apologises for his anger
Diane is cleaning at Bryntirion when DJ comes home and apologises for his outburst earlier, explaining that he was upset;
"It's dragging up the past"
“This business with Mam waking up the past.   You’re annoyed you were not in on the secret,” he says, “Dad can testify that you can’t keep secrets.”
Diane is sorry she has made things difficult for him
She is sorry that she has made things difficult for him.
“I shall be all right,” he assures her,
"But I'm not sure about Cadno"
“But I’m not sure about Cadno – she had a fright today.”
"All I want is justice for Linda"
Diane insists that all she wants is justice for Linda, but DJ points out that his mother got what she wanted.
"Mam wouldn't want Cadno to suffer"
“The last thing that she’d want is to see Cadno suffering because of that.
Liv is taken away by the police
Tyler tells Liv that he is sorry, and that he will not be visiting her, as it would only make things more difficult.   She is led away by the police,
"You've done the right thing, you know"
and Iolo stresses that he has done the right thing;  “She will get the help she needs now,” but this does not make it any easier for Tyler.
Cadno tries to allay Bobi's fears
Bobi is rather anxious, so his mother assures him she will not be going anywhere with the police ever again.   As the boys go out to play,
"I had a word with the solicitor"
Eifion tells her he has been talking to the solicitor;  Cadno wants to know the truth.
"A few get prison sentences"
“A few get prison sentences in cases like this – up to 14 years, if the judge wants to make an example of them.   But you’re not going to prison, not if DJ speaks on your behalf.”
"Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst!"
Cadno recalls what she was told by her mother – to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.
"I shall be here for you"
“Whatever happens, I shall be here for you – think positive, that’s what you need to do now!” he urges, “Have a proper chat with the solicitor, and tell him everything.   You fetched the tablets for Linda – you didn’t force her to take them.
"We'll make everyone understand!"
“Together, we’ll make everyone else understand that, too – the police, the judge – everyone!”
He gives her a reassuring  hug
He hugs her.
